The round uses an open-tip match-round design common in sniper ammunition, and is considered “barrier blind,” meaning its aim stays truer through windshields, walls and other barriers. Initially, it was considered as a way to increase the lethality of Marines carrying the M4 carbine, which has less stopping power than the M16A4 because of its shorter barrel, but was approved for use in January with both rifles.Outstanding. The Marine Corps wisely stuck with the M-16A4 instead of going with the 'trendy' and 'fashionable' M4 (don't misunderstand me, I realize that the M4 is being issued to Officers and SNCO's and others in select positions)...but a Rifleman needs a Rifle, not a carbine.

I'm a bit surprised that the M16A4 still uses the old fixed stock. Todays infantryman - both marine and army - carry body-armor with SAPIs, ops vests and radio webbing which increases the bulk of the soldier. A telescopic stock allows the shortened rifle to be aimed and fired more comfortably and accurately - a fixed stock makes you look like Frankenstein reaching and craning your head when taking aim.
ReplyDeleteThis is why certain NATO M-16 (type) users (the Dutch, Danes and I believe the Canadians) are slowly moving towards telescopic stocks for all of their rifles.
But you're right; the SOCOM 'bling' of having a short carbine should be discouraged in favor of the more effective long barrel.
the fixed stock is all about Marine Corps Martial Arts. until an adjustable stock is capable (and durable) of being used repeatedly for a butt stroke then and only then will you see the Marines switch to it.

ReplyDeleteI'm not convinced you guys have fixed all the problems with that (no flame just an observation...I've seen too many Royal Marines carrying M-16's)...I do like the Tavor though....but if we're issuing M4 type weapons only to supporting troops then I think we're good. If you're talking about a 5.56mm bullpup no matter who makes it then I ask what's the point...just stick with the M-16A4
