Digital Camo on the EFV?

http://news.yahoo.com/video/sandiego-channel8-15751279/new-assault-vehicle-storms-the-beach-at-camp-pendleton-20637266

Follow the link to watch a local news report on the EFV.  Watch carefully and you'll see the first US vehicle (I believe) outfitted in digital camo!  Pretty wild.

UPDATE!
Marcase found some screen captures from a Defense News video on the EFV.  You get a better view of the digital camo...

  1. Do you think cam of any sort is that effective on a slab sided vehicle?

Never been really convinced myself, I suppose it makes it look nice and modern for that all important PR push!

I think most nations are going for products like the Barracuda system from SAAB.

Do US forces use this at all Solomon or is there a US equivelent?

  2. a different system, similar effect.

the thing with the digital camo is that when operating in jungle or woodland situation, visual identification counts too. it might be slab sided but when you're in a tree line and that digital does its job you're not going to see it...or rather its going to be harder to see...electronic or thermal detection is a different animal and thats where the barracuda and cousin systems come into there own.

remember the ole mark 1 eyeball is still an effective ISR platform.

  3. they say 575 at the end of 2016, is that the IOC date? i cant imagine them completing an order of 575 between now and then along with testing.

  4. i'm not sure when the IOC is but if it survives the budget process they better churn those out as fast as they can.

there is too much uncertainty for them to be as leisurely as they have been.

Col Moore is pressing hard now but he hasn't over the past couple of years. That's his fault (he is responsible for what does or doesn't happen under his command) and he admitted that some of the cost savings that they tried didn't work out.

that's cold comfort if the program is canceled this year when it should have been in service back in 2005.

  5. how long would it take to complete the orders if the budgets are OK and its given the green light by for full scale production? the news story said a lot of 575 (or around there) would be ordered, how long would it take for those to be made and delivered? are we talking a year or two?
