Scuttlebutt has it that a new Operating Concept is due to hit the streets real soon...as in a couple of days. Supposedly it will emphasize...
1. A doctrinal move to ensure that the Marine Corps never performs the role of a 'second land army'
2. To get Marine detachments back onboard large ships...Destroyers, Aircraft Carriers..even Coast Guard Cutters...
The rest we'll have to wait and see...consider this your early warning order...
Now this could be a good thing for Uncle Sam's Misguided Children. You give them jobs that are useful, and different enough from the army, so they have 'a reason to exist' and things like that.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if it ties in with the stuff about defense cuts? If they really do cuts like those this might be a sign of it. Less 2nd army and more old school marines.
i see the current Commandant's finger prints all over this.
ReplyDeletehe can see the moves that are being made by Gates and this is a way for the Marines to carve out a role and mission that no one else will touch.
Additionally with the downsizing of all the services, the Navy won't be able to continue to have its NECC doing Marine missions.
it could be a win-win for the Navy-Marine team....but it will also mean fewer amphibs are going to be easier to get away with.
but you're right, it will be good to see the Marines doing old school Marine work again.
A few of the squids might be happy that they don't have to keep being naval infantry anymore. Maybe they can get rid of the blue cammies now!
