F-35B BF-4 Flies STOVL Mode

BF-4, the fourth F-35 short takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) test aircraft, flies mode 4 for the first time on April 7, 2011, at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md. Mode 4 engages the F-35 STOVL’s shaft-driven LiftFan system that allows the aircraft to hover, perform short takeoffs and land vertically. BF-4 is the first aircraft equipped with full mission systems to fly mode 4.

  3. Thomas:

Are we never supposed to report any progress on the program? The program as currently structured, will never return to the 2007 plan. Keeping that in mind, there are those of us who still look forward to the F-35's deployment and enjoy hearing about the different milestones as they occur.

In case you missed it, the JSF program "turned the corner" last year in it's rate of test flight increase. As of today they are approximately 12 months behind the 2007 plan, and gaining. Here is a graph that shows the "turning of the corner" that started post-Sep2010.

  7. Good news for JSF.
