Libyan Forces fight NATO to a standstill.
I know what you're going to say.
This isn't an actual NATO loss...its a rebel failure. NATO fought according to UN rules.
I know all that, but think about this sad fact. As a military union, for whatever reason, NATO is 0-2. A loss or draw in Afghanistan and a loss or draw in Libya.
The dumbest thing the former Soviet Union ever did was to NOT test Western military capabilities. Conventionally we were at best on par...and no one had the guts to go nuclear. Germany would have been conquered and the Nordic countries imperiled.
But back to this Libya thing. If the madman can hold on long enough to start peace talks then he's won. If he can be patient enough to martial his forces...do something silly to keep gas prices high without bringing down retaliatory strikes...is smart enough to keep his hands off international terrorism...then inside of a year he'll have regained all lost territory and no one will care.
Amazing.

Western military capabilities today are but a pale shadow of what they were in the days of the USSR. There was a reason they didn't test the West.
ReplyDeletea pale shadow ??? but compared to the Soviet Forces they were arranged against...at best on par.
ReplyDeletethe truth of the matter is that it isn't necessarily the military capability that carries the day but rather the unity of effort.
i'm not sure that exists...even back then Margret Thatcher was on her way out. Reagan was gone and Bush Sr. was in charge and i'm not sure the fire in the belly existed elsewhere in NATO.
militarily...we could have held the line. politically? i'm not so sure.
Yep, a pale shadow. No more 600-ship navy. No more thousands of tanks and planes in Europe. No more REFORGER-type exercises with the Europeans. Then consider all the hardware and manpower reductions the Europeans have gone through since the USSR ceased to exist.
ReplyDeleteSolomon, the truth about the real capabilities of the Soviet Union only now emerges. The structure and the quality of weapons was seriously lacking in terms of quality. See the conflicts in the former Soviet space, particularly those fought by Russia and you will have an idea on what their capabilities war.
