I was wondering the same thing after reading the story elsewhere. Two are charged with assaulting Cadet King and the responding officers are now being investigated by internal affairs.
As I understand it, there is a cadet review board that reviews cadet conduct issues and from what I had read, the decision to suspend and make available for deployment Cadet King came from USMA faculty after being tipped off by Houston PD.
I understand the need for a strong honor code at the USMA, but this decision seemed to be reached in haste.
It could take months for this to be sorted out and in the meantime Cadet King will have the stain of suspension and the risks associated with deployment before it was intended.
As far as suspensions/expulsions in military academies go, King's case was lightening fast. The Superintendant has ultimate suspension/expulsion authority, so I'm guessing that when the Superintendant got tipped off from HPD he immediately order King to be suspended without a proper investigation.
In my opinion, the way King was treated by West Point was shameful. I think this should end the Sup's career.
a presumption of guilt before all the facts are in.
a celebrity versus an everyman.
this guy got fucked by the system and now instead of the system doing the right thing (like ending the career of the Academy Supt....instead of these officers being fired....instead of LaBelle's men being put under the jail and she being sued ) we have a young man fighting to just keep his career on track.
