CDR Salamander nails the J-20.

Read his post here, but I think CDR Salamander nails it when it comes to the J-20.  Many believed the J-20 to be a fighter.  Why?  Because thats what the US, and Russia are working on.  This is what Salamander says....
I don't know about you - but the J-20 looks less like a fighter and more like a penetrating attack aircraft; almost an update of the F-111 concept.

Even with allowances for Chinese technology not being as compact as Western technology (which I think is slightly a bogus argument in 2011) - that bird is big for a reason. I don't think air superiority is it.
Read the whole thing but I would bet good money that by this time next Tuesday every think tank in the US will be switching gears and following the CDR's lead.

  1. The J-20 planform and size reeks of long-range missile truck. Maybe Air-to-Air, maybe Air-to-Anything (including afloat).
I wonder if they have a little Chinese thread on a Chinese aviation blog someplace with comments like "Its soooooo beeeeg - It cannobe Stearthy at all!", "It's wing-roading too high!". "This is cragee -- We should build more J-10s instead!"
Oh yeah - they're not allowed to second guess decisions over there are they?
    (Sorry...long day)

  2. i have heard this more than once, i see it as its number one job is to attack our ships, its size will probably give it decent range, and can launch sea skimming anti-ship missiles, enough of those with enough of missiles and they can overwhelm the burkes, and take out the screening vessles or take out the carrier itself, make the US think twice before bringing a CSG too close. also take out taiwans surface fleet or opposing fleets in the south china sea out as well.
