U.S. soldiers from 5-20 infantry Regiment attached to 82nd Airborne walk on patrol in Zharay district in Kandahar province, southern Afghanistan April 26, 2012. |
I don't know the designation for the sniper rifle that the Soldier is carrying but to see not only that weapon but I would assume their designated Marksman right behind him seems unusual. Wonder whats going on in this part of the country.
That's the Remington XM-2010 Enhanced Sniper Rifle, Sol. All of the Army's M-24 models are being upgraded, as well as buying regularly built 2010s, in a new chambering of .300 WinMag. Thus an M-24 on steroids. It's been in theater since March '11, making me wonder why it hasn't lost it's 'X' designator. It's intended to replace all M-24 SWSs out there in U.S. service.
ReplyDeletethanks for the info. that had me scratching my head. i can't know it all so it helps to have guys like you, Will that help fill in the blanks.
ReplyDelete300 WinMag! ouch! that thing must kick like a mule.
Not a problem, Sol. I don't think the recoil is too bad, but then again, these guy's have form: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywUeeVChc1c
ReplyDeleteThat's prob a sniper group. Behind the dm is another long rifle
ReplyDeletegood eye. i missed that.
ReplyDeleteThat's the M-110 SASS. I really don't know why they keep going forward with that system. The first batch that was deployed had a 50-percent total fail rate, making them weapons to be cannibalized for the ones that did happen to run longer... and now they want a lighter, more compact version. Also, apparently, nobody liked the horse-cock suppressor issued with it, so they want a short, more efficient one of those too... Jesus. I guess the new ones are working alright, or the Army's bullshitting again due to a quote I came across.
ReplyDeleteBut, yes. That is an Army scout-sniper team. The teams are being made up of XM-2010s (sniper) and M-110s (spotter).
The quote; "The Army responded to the referenced article clarifying that the rifle is functioning perfect and they are just looking for a smaller, lighter version of M110 for the spotter in a sniper team, providing the sniper is equipped with the new XM2010. "The spotter will have an urban sniper support weapon which will be the M110. … Now you’ve increased the lethality of the team…" - Program Manager Lt. Col. Chris Lehner."
