Interesting and sad.
Interesting because you could literally see him fishing for support while making this outrageous statement. Interesting because he tried to moderate his words at the end when he found that support wasn't coming. Sad because he has support but they were smart enough to avoid doing it on camera.
Chris Hayes...chump of the week
If one is against a war one needs to be rather careful in separating the political choice the nation has made vs those who are sent to fight on all of our behalf. So yeah he crossed a line with the notion that calling our nations honored dead heroes can be seen as a political statement in support of the war.
ReplyDeleteThat said I do think the term hero is over used these days and Chris Hayes might have had a point worth discussing. Is the act of serving in the military, the fire dept, etc., by itself an heroic act? Is everyone who serves in combat a hero or is serving in combat itself a heroic act?
A hero used to be considered someone who distinguished themselves and thus was an exceptional person. Today, however, the term hero seems more readily used to describe a heroic act and further that this definition is often very broadly applied.
"I treasure my remark to my Grandson who asked, 'Grandpa, were you a hero in the war?' 'No,' I answered, 'but I served in the company of Heroes.'" ~Maj. Winters
