MARSOC service pistol. Cool trumps practical.

COLT Rail Gun
Soldier Systems is reporting that MARSOC has chosen the Colt 1911 with rails as its next service pistol.

My immediate reaction is what the fuck?

Is this another case of cool trumping practicality?  Lets face it.  THERE ARE A NUMBER of practical, reliable, less expensive, more capable 45 caliber pistols available on the market today.
GLOCK 21
You want a go to hell and back 45?  How about the Glock 21.  13 instead of 8 rounds, Polymer so it can handle the jungle better, railed so it can take lasers or lights....oh and its freaking available without having to buy every single piece of it in a custom shop.
FNH 45.
You want fancy?  You want to slam a suppressor, optics and lasers on your gun?  Then how about the FNH 45?  The point is this.  I don't know who the clown is in MARSOC that has this Colt fetish but its becoming annoying.  Its not even the best weapon available, its only the most expensive, the least durable and the hardest to maintain.

MARINE CORPS PROCUREMENT IS BROKEN.

Update:  PLEASE!  Please don't hit me with the 1911 is the AK of pistols!  Its legendary but its a primitive design that's been passed by newer models.  How about a few more examples of pistols that would serve MARSOC better than the cool boy 1911...

XD Tactical 45

HK USP 45

It didn't take long for MARSOC to turn into just another of the pretty boy Special Ops outfits did it???  I've never been a supporter but I had high hopes that they would follow in the US Army Ranger and Special Forces tradition and not tag behind Navy SEALs.  Boutique weapons for the sake of boutique weapons fit is not the way to go.  The accountants are coming for all, not just the Conventional Forces.  This will bite SOCOM in the ass and all the camp followers in the Commandant's office too.  I can't wait for new leadership.  Both in the Commandant's office and in the White House.

  1. The Glock is known to have dust and water issues and the 1911A1 is the AK of the pistol world.

  2. dude you are smoking CRACK!

    are you off your meds?

the GLOCK has dust and water issues and the 1911 is the AK of the pistol world? you just lost every ounce of credibility when it comes to talking about weapons issues you might have ever had!

    GEEZE dude.

    1. I carried the 45 when I was in the US Army and the only problem I had with it was magazine lip issues.

With the Glock, however, you can find many sites and youtube clips showing dust/water problems and when using +P rounds above 9mm.

    2. yeah and on YouTube you can find dumbasses shooting themselves with their own weapons! oh and as far as +P rounds are cocerned only a few guns are actually certified from the maker to fire them.

Glocks don't float your boat then pick any of the other guns on the list but I can BET big bucks on this .... they didn't run a competition, they just picked the favorite from the Marines in the room. this isn't about practicality, its about cool factor. the 45 has been dog in that old format for a long time.

  3. how does adding laser sights and a flash light affect the ability to holster or draw the weapon? do you have to buy special holsters or can the ones issued be molded to the extra gear on the weapon? sorry for my Naivety

  4. oh you're into a custom holster setup. especially if you're using kydex and most people are these days. i don't even want to try and figure out the holster you're buying if you have a can, laser and attached sights on the gun but that's a whole different procurement story.

  5. i imagine colt SHOULD throw them in for free especially since there weapon couldn't compete against any of the other weapons in a competition.

    1. and that's the problem ... they didn't have a requirement... they just picked what they wanted.

  7. It figures. I wonder if the Krauts had won WWI, would their Special Ops still be issued Lugers?

    100-year old design
    inferior magazine capacity
    Heavier steel vs. lighter polymer

I'm not saying the 1911 is bad, but is it better than the other options?

  8. thank you! i don't begin to know how they arrived at this other than tacticool which is gonna make them tactifools!

  9. its a horrible choice to choose the 1911. Force Recon has had so many problems with their MEU versions and are moving back to the m9 from what my fellow JTACs are telling me. Also the 1911 isnt the "AK" of the pistol world, i mean really? that thing takes so much love and has to be "broken" in to really make it worth the while. Why wouldnt you buy something more light weight, more practical? Glock, S&W, FN, HK all make better pistols than the 1911, its such a "oh i have a 1911..." who gives a fuck you can get more out of something much cheaper.

    1. There's a reason why so many gunsmiths made their bones working on 1911s....because 1911s need work.

Why did I buy a SIG Sauer P226 in 1993? It never needed to be broken in, it eats everything I feed it, it is always accurate and it was far less expensive than a tuned-up or custom 1911.

    2. well we now know that part of the extra people that MARSOC are going to end up with will be armorers. they'll need them to keep these 1911s working. hell they'll probably need some at patrol bases....all the new holsters are kydex and don't come with flaps to protect against the elements and dirt and mud so these things are gonna be jamming like its no bodies business. people forgot how terrible jungle conditions are. there was a reason why the old holsters had flaps on them they'll either go back to the M12 or design a new version of it. either way the 1911 will be in the shop more than it'll be in the field.

  10. If it were up to me, MARSOC would be issued a P220 or USP 45. Both are vastly better combat options than the 1911. And my great uncle carried a 1911 as a LT in WWII.

  11. i forgot all about the Sig's! and i didn't know that Force had given up on the 45...i know that they were getting made by the guys up at Quantico but i figured it was still going on.

the 1911 was a fine gun, but time has passed it by. time to move on.

  12. Also, they are the only sf group using the 1911. I'm certain army sf is using glocks and the seals use sigs and hks.

  13. that just makes it worse. i really wanted to believe that Naval Special Warfare was leading MARSOC astray, but heck, they've chosen some pretty awesome weapons. you can't sneeze at Sigs and HK...especially in the 45 caliber.

  14. It s the same here in Portugal...a few years back we held a competition for a new assault rifle to replace the HK G3...the finalists were the HK G 36 and the israeli TAR 21...the Tavor TAR 21 won the competition(more reliable, cheaper, etc)but gess what ?He bought the G 36...the truth is germany holds more political and economical power over us than israel ...so we bought the worst rifle...
