Tragedy has struck.
Mobs are assaulting our embassy's and consulates all over the Middle East.
Instead of calls going out to SOCOM, or the Army, calls are going to the Marine Corps and our Navy partner.
This is a tragedy. MAKE NO MISTAKE ABOUT IT! But it is also an opportunity for the Marine Corps to shine in the eyes of the public. Hopefully our MEU is fully staffed and trained for embassy reinforcement and evacuation of US citizens. Hopefully they will be able to solve this diplomatically and host nations will control their people (I want to be careful with this though...free speech is free speech even if I think they're crazy as jay birds...but killing people IS crossing a line no matter what type of speech occurred)...
But if they don't or can't control the local populace, then I want MY United States Marine Corps ready to heel stomp some throats, double tap some foreheads and put three in the upper torso.
The USMC will be most ready when the nation is least ready.
Its time to live up to that motto.

ReplyDeleteSemer Fi! I hope they break things and kill people!
I know your first reaction is out for blood... not the right time on this one.
ReplyDeleteWe've uncorked a pressurised bottle that the authoritarian regime was admittedly managing keeping a lid on. Several factions are .
How you respond could contribute towards setting up a new Front along southern Europe. It would benefit the US in the longer run if actions can be taken to avoid encouraging a powerful anti-west Block from forming across the water from Southern Europe in the Med. Given Middle East funding, the potential to pervert a "The West is against all Islam" message. Fronts in the Pacific, Arabian Gulf *and* the Mediterranean is strategically unsound if avoidable.
Need to establish if this action is a faction using the opportunity or a knee-jerk mob response and handle appropriately.
There's already moves to remind states of the diplomatic importance of defending embassies, surprisingly Putin made a powerful statement in this regard which in most ways supports the US.
Also need to bear in mind that Religion shapes the daily lives of Libyans (and other nations), whereas with the West going secular centuries ago we've already been through and subsequently forgotten most of the pain of learning to how tolerate different confessions in the same state.
the Arab Spring established a anti-west coalition among the Arab states. the toppling of dictators with the consent of western powers was a mistake that was predicted by many. the idea of continuing to be patient with a people that refuse to modernize is an impossibility. we've given too much and gotten too little in return.
ReplyDeletePatient? We need to agree on a definition ;)
