There was a vehicle with the same propulsion as these at P. I. when I went through in the 70's it was used to pull deserting Recruits out of the marsh around the Island. Screw drive works good except on hard surfaces.
Chrysler actually built a proof of concept vehicle and the Navy tested in in Louisiana for possible use in Vietnam. The idea crops up now and again, there's a bunch of videos of a Russian one on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpcv_-ICcIk
I've actually found a Phillipine discussion board that insists they bought two of these and reconditioned them as river patrol boats but I'm skeptical. http://www.timawa.net/forum/index.php?topic=16446.0
