UFC 153. Not much to talk about.

Silva toying with Bonnar.  He dodges the kick and then walks back to the spot he was standing on. Bonnar looks dazed and confused already.  The guy was beat before he stepped in the ring.
The finish.  Angle 1.
The finish.  Angle 2.
I just don't know.

Dana has got to get a better grip on these fights.  Maybe fewer pay per view shows, but he has got to get a grip.  If Silva only fights twice a year then so be it as long as he's fighting worthy competition.  Seriously!  Everything I feared for Bonnar came true in this fight.

Its time for him to hang it up.  Silva?  I still like him, but he's starting to seriously rub me the wrong way.  I would just like to see someone really push him hard.  If Sonnen can stop talking and work hard for a couple of months and then get a good ring strategist then maybe it could be him.  But I don't think he wants anymore of Silva either.

Bad times for the UFC unless they can mix it up a bit.

  1. It's not really the UFC's fault that they have a few dominant fighters spread out among weight classes such as Jones, Silva, GSP, etc. At least Silva and GSP will be retiring soon. Jones could very well be even more dominant than Silva.

There were some good fights on the card, including the undercard, but certainly the two headline events were disappointing. That said Silva getting a KO with that very well placed knee was well worth watching, even against Bonnar.

I agree Sonnen probably doesn't fight Silva again and after the 2nd fight I think we all have to accept Silva was significantly injured for the 1st fight. The one super fight available is Jones vs Silva and both are on record saying they wouldn't do it. I really don't think it's fair to ask GSP to try and put on enough muscle mass to fight Silva and I don't see that ever happening.

  2. yeah i don't think GSP would put on the weight but they've got to do something to spice things up. these guys at the top seem to be picking fights and we're not seeing the old UFC where there was no shame with losing a fight or two because the comp was so tough and the belt changed hands often.

  3. Two men fighting inside a cage...seems kinda gay.

No wonder you like it, eh?

    1. Personally I think it's interesting you use gay as a negative connotation. That aside if you think fighting, MMA, boxing, martial arts, etc., is somehow negative you're entitled to your opinion but one might be forgiven for assuming it's not something you're involved with?

  4. I did enjoy seeing Big Nog submit Herman, esp considering Herman's "jiu jitsu doesn't work on me" quote.

    1. Well in my opinion many of the undercard fights are the most interesting and/or competitive and have been for a while. I also think things are cyclical. Guys like Silva, GSP, and Jones don't come around that often and there are good fighters in those weight divisions just none at the moment in the same class as those three. At some point we'll see more divisions with greater competition and more good fights.

That said I'm not sure the average fan appreciates most of MMA. Fitch can have a great fight and most people describe it as boring, as an example. Maybe they need to separate the fighters more often and/or quicker and reduce the emphasis on grappling to please the fans even though for me it's an important element in MMA. Same for standing them up quicker. Most fans seems to focus on striking or explosive submissions vs fighters working methodically for advantage.

It's also worth adding a lot of fighters turn down fights vs Silva, which led to a few years of him being extremely annoying, and while Jones has fought almost everyone how excited is everyone else to fight him now? Jones to me is the most exciting fighter I've seen in a long while and he just keeps getting better every fight. Finding good fights for him the next couple years isn't going to be Jones or the UFC's fault. They actually need some younger guys to develop more before they fight Jones and nobody decent currently in my view has a good shot to provide a good fight.
