Touch stone reaffirmed...

Amphibious by nature, expeditionary through training...
 Via Marine Corps Times...
Marines are definitely getting back to their expeditionary roots.
The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit just returned to Camp Lejeune, N.C., following a seven month deployment. But as Marine Corps Times’ Gidget Fuentes reported, when the 24th MEU was still in the Persian Gulf, there were more Marines on Navy ships than in the combat zone in Afghanistan in late-October.
Things are starting to sort themselves out.  Just a note to the head shed.  The Marines never left the sea, they were assigned a mission by the Commander in Chief that required max effort to win a war in the desert.

I've been going over Marine Corps history and I can't find one mention of the Marine Corps needing to get back to its amphibious roots after prolonged combat in Vietnam.  The "back to the sea" nonsense was a product of poor messaging.  Nothing more or less.

  1. How about the Marine's "Banana Wars roots?" You guys spent more time in Haiti and Nicaragua than anywhere else.

    1. well its officially known as the "small wars" and its the basis for a couple of conflicting doctrines...Smedley Butler came up with the "War is a racket" theme and modern Counter INsurgency was born.

but that's kinda beside the point. the real issue is that long campaigns are not what the Marine Corps is designed for.

  2. It’s criminal. Red China now has a modern water jet amphibious IFV but our marines are stuck with this old clunker. AAV AMTRAC is a piece of junk and the pentagon couldn’t come up with something relevant for the 21st century after billions of dollars wasted on a program only to see it got canned.

  3. The Marines in my family except for me are all desert Marines. I served as the only amphibious/sea going Marine in the four.
Oceans of water and Oceans of sand, all Marine.

No, a Naval campaign that uses amphibious forces is quick and dirty, 90 days those ships cannot sit around and become targets for subs and aircraft especially in a Nuke weapons free environment.
Haiti, Nicaragua, at one time were hot I think because of the Panama Canal's vital route to the Pacific or Atlantic. You could say it was the Marines version of the Army Indian wars in CONUS, Mexico and the Philippines.
It's way past time to dump the desert and go back to the sea/Land/Air battle as Amphibs.
