EADS NA Armed Scout

  1. You can get the same quality and performance of this helicopter with an upgraded Kiowa. Army needs a scout heliopter like the S-92 cause that's the future of rotor aircraft. Hopefully the Army can afford to buy S-92s.

    1. I agree, S-92 design looks good.

    2. love the S-92 but has anyone looked at the budget mess? the Army will be lucky to get anything new that can get past the bean counters...oh and one thing this helicopter can do that the Kiowa can't is insert patrols or do light utility work.

    3. Kiowa & scout helicopters) are small 3-5 ton heli for a reason. s92 is a 12ton heli. you cant have a giant scout helicopter. s92 have has there fair share of vibrational issue. s92 is 3-4 times the cost of uh72.

    4. You also talk about budget problems, well an upgraded Kiowa would be fine.

    1. it matters on how it could be done. the Marine Corps found out that the AH-1Z and UH-1Y cost about the same whether you upgraded it or bought it new. i think the Army will find the same thing applies...so if you can get a new airframe instead of an upgraded one which would you choose.

    2. Check out this Kiowa. www.avxaircraft.com/company.html Kiowa AVX. S-97 is the future of helicopter designs, not this EADS helicopter, it's so basic. We need to move forward with something better. These scout helicopters in my opinion are worthless because they're so vulnerable to enemy ground fire. Best off sending uavs.

  4. i've been following that for awhile and even posted its pics. everything is drawings...they don't even have a working example last i checked and you can't discount the value of utility and scouting. uav's can't provide the kind of direct fire support that a kiowa or other scout helicopter can. additionally the loss rate of UAVs is going become an issue in tight budget environments. my guess. uavs are gonna lose their shine and manned aircraft are gonna be the lead again.

    1. Scout helicopters seem to only be effective in low threat environments. 35 Kiowas and 35 brave pilots were lost in the 2003 Iraq war. Some downed by AK-47 rounds I've heard. OH-58s weren't even used in desert storm. The Apache was used as a scout and blew up Iraqi radar sites clearing the way for the Air Force to come in. What we could do to save money is convert some UH-62 Lakotas for recon, we don't need 900 Kiowas. Your right about UAVS though, I think UAVs have taken up way to much of the army's budget. Could use some of that money for GCV.
