yeah i noticed the twin 30mm mounts too. wondering. the Marines were to use that on the EFV and they were manned....i guess they can modded to an unmanned version too. interesting.
The LCS is so fast and agile that a 800 Knot Sunburn anti-ship missile will have to lead it by at least 2 micro radians more than it will have to lead a destroyer. Of course the destroyer has ECM, decoys and ESSM to shoot back...
Yeah the guns look nice but here's what DOT&E reports:
“Ship operations at high speeds cause vibrations that make accurate use of the 57 mm gun very difficult.”
“The 30 mm guns and associated combat system exhibit reliability problems. The Navy established a Failure Review Board to identify and correct deficiencies in 30 mm gun performance.”
What it looks like to me is an under armed and undermanned frigate that isn't capable of conducting any missions a frigate normally does, that's moreover too short ranged and not able to operate with a battle group, escort a convoy, etc. What's worse it's too expensive for too little capability and there are two different classes with different systems so maintenance and upgrades are more expensive. The entire conceptual design of the ship is flawed on so many levels it's rather stunning.
Those 30mm guns are there in the weapon module spaces, and not working properly, because not a single mission module is operational. That said the missile system they trying to get to work for LCS aren't exactly much superior to a 30mm. Flag officers should have lost their jobs over this program. Just my opinion, YMMV.
Man, this thing looks great. And that twin 30mm module gives it knuckles. Not bad.
