These guys are members if the French Foreign Legion. The 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment, 2e Régiment étranger de parachutistes, 2e REP is an airborne regiment of the French Foreign Legion.
Were confusion can set is of the 4 primary companies have a specialty classification. 1st company is urban warfare, 2nd company is mountain, 3rd is amphibious operations and 4th is demolition and sniping.
The third are some the guys that jumped into Mali north of Timbuktu back on 28 January; here is link to the jump video:
One other unique fact is these guys even though they are Airborne and are classified a special force commando unit of the French Air borne brigade, they still wear their Legion Green berets with the winged daggered arm badge instead of the traditional maroon.
As far as French Marines this too is confusing, first off you have the Navy Fusiliers of the Navy, these guy’s have a primary mission is to protect and defend key French Naval sites. From thier ranks come the Naval Commando, Commandos marines which is thier special opreation force.
From what I’ve read they are kind of a cross between Force Recon and a SEAL team.
Finally you get the Troupes de marine, now these guy’s trace thier liniage back to the Navy in the 1600;s but since the late 1950’s they have been part of the French Army and for years were the backbone of the French Colonial troops.
