CH-46 (the European version) display

There is no doubt that the MV-22 is superior to the CH-46 in every aspect EXCEPT for maneuvering in a tight landing area.

On a side note, can anyone tell me what that is that's rotating at the bottom of the helicopter?

  1. Looks like a radar mast of some kind. Sort of like the ones they have on ships.

    1. i initially thought that but why on the belly and not the nose? maybe for brownouts? i'm not exactly sure how that works...i just don't know.

    2. Based on the markings, it's a Swedish Boeing Vertol 107 - what they call the HKP4.

It took a bit of searching, but based on http://www.airvectors.net/avch47_1.html it seems that this model was the HKP4B, used by the navy for ASW and minesweeping. They did indeed have a radome mounted under the tail-ramp, designation PS-864.

    4. Hmm...I think you might be right. I just found this picture, which seems to show the ramp radar: http://www.hottail.nl/basevisits/2004/0829-Ronneby/Images/Hkp4C-69-2.jpg

      Bloody ugly thing.

But, I did also manage to find two other photos which show the thing we're looking for. Seems to be on one of the Swedish Air Force (Flygvapnet) variants, I'm guessing a HPK 4A:

    6. I was talking about the ramp radar in particular, but I take your point. :P

Honestly, I think I've got about as far with this as I'm going to get. It seems to be unique to the Swedes - none of the Boeing-Vertol prototypes had it, and neither did any other country that operated the CH-46. Honestly, I've never seen anything like it before.

I'm afraid you'll need to find a subject-matter expert if you want any more information on it.

    8. It's got to be a radar of some kind, and it didn't seem to serve on the HKP 4D models. Strictly A model, for whatever reason. Why they decided to put it in such an odd place, and what exactly it was used for, I haven't the foggiest.

  2. The helicopter doing the show is a HKP 4A as stated, the serial number is C/N 401. It is a radar rotating under the belly. but I have no idea what it is there for, I have not seen that on any other helicopter 4. I've searched through some of the airforces old archives, but not found any reference to what it is there for. It might have been there just for a test, the helicopter was the oldest in the fleet, and when the airshow were performed (1986 at the F4 airforce base)) it had been in storage for more than 16 years.
