I'd be surprised if there were any UAV's larger than hand-launched, Raven sized devices used. The FAA only closed airspace up to 3,000 ft, so I think that using larger UAV's in this situation would have been very dangerous from a deconfliction standpoint, since every manned police asset in Massachusetts was probably in the area.
60,000 ft according to Wiki, but I think it's operating altitude probably depends more on the sensor it's carrying. And yeah they closed the airspace but the news report I heard said it was only up to 3,000 ft, which makes sense if your clearing it for police choppers. Now I suppose they could have meant 30,000 ft, in which case it would have been much easier to deconflict with UAVs.

ReplyDeleteI thought that on the day of the attack and on the day of the kill all airtraffic was restricted. how high can a global hawk fly anyway?
DeleteIt have similar capabilities as famous U-2, so 20 km service ceiling would be a safe bet.
