Both China and Israel deny any aspect of the Lavi went into the J-10. Whether that's true or not at that time the Clinton Administration was selling China just about any military tech they wanted. The aircraft is said to be based on the previous J-9 and has design aspects of various aircraft besides the Lavi.
In any case the one foreign design bureau we do know helped with the J-10 was the the Russian Siberian Aeronautical Research Institute. The interesting thing to me is that it took them 18 year to develop and after 10 years of production they have I believe less than 250. Either it's not that successful a design, they have issues producing it, or they simply aren't thrilled they have to buy the engines from Russia.
Israel as been suplying military tech to China since the 1980s...and in 2006 a chinese Anti-ship missile sunk one of their ships...talk about irony... The design is sound(its from Israel with american help :)).But i douth that production and engines are «au pair» it western tech... And i dont buy that Israel would not sell high tech to western foes:they had scientits and technical personal working in Argentine during the Falklands/Malvinas conflit and half of the avionics in the Flanker family come from Israel...
The problem is engines. Jet engine technology is one area where China is lagging behind West and Russia. The J-10 uses a single Saturn AL-31 but Russia has limited exports due to China breaking copyright laws. China has flown a J-10 with the Chinese WS-10A jet engine so we will have to see if numbers go up.
Ah the famous IAI La...sorry the J-10...The chinese are really masters at knock offs...

China follows the slow and steady approach to procurement.
DeleteAs of now, they are waiting from the AESA ans WS-10A turbofan equipped J-10B to finish testing. That jet will be procured in large numbers, quickly.
