List is quite correct a piston fighter zenith (except for twin mustang that in my opinion offers only range but not much in terms of preformance) ,not the same as top WWII fighter list. F4U is an old tin can compared to the competiton on the list that mostly didn't see any WWII combat.
Most of these did not see much combat, if any, in WWII. They left off the Hawker Tempest, which shot down more V-1 buzz bombs and more Me-262 jets than ALL other fighters combined.
The Hawker Fury was to the Tempest as the F8F was to the F6F. Better fighters, but not much chance to prove it.
The F-82 Twin Mustang suffered from the massive licensing cost increase for Merlins that Britain imposed after WWII, since they were effectively broke. So the F-82 got Allisons, instead
One that never got out of the prototype stage due to changes in the war was the P-72. Full tricked out with a supercharger it might have hit 500+ mph.
ReplyDeletegreat info. i never heard of the P-72...time for me to build a what if WW2 airforce!
