French Amphibious Ops.

Note:  I just can't warm up to the LCAT.  Another thing.  Are the French capable of carrying out an amphibious assault?  I don't think so.  Administrative landings and LIMITED amphibious raids, but assaults are a bridge too far for them.

  1. We have an amphibious assault brigade... But it's smmall ( 5 regiments..) Since the end of cold war capacity has greatly decreased.
But here nobody think a D-Day could rehappend.
Now Air force and choppers can literraly sterilize the coast... or we have enough of intel capacity to land where there is no resistance.

Even china doesn't have enough of troops to protect all his coast, and if china could, we have paratroop brigade ( recently seen in Mali).

So I agree with your statement, but i think it's smart for our 30M€ budget...

    1. i agree with everything you said except for loving your paratroop brigade.

how hard is shooting down a transport? airborne assault is a bigger dinosaur than amphibious assault.

  2. The practice actually is to drop (tactical flight by 15 meters or chooper) commando before the brigade, to disable defense on landing zone ( done in Mali).
Paratroopers survival is dependant of air superiority...Nobody is searching for a stealth A400/C17... despite it would solve this problem.
But I think without amphibious assault needs air superiority too...( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falklands_War )

USAF could prehaps us B2 for commando insertion ?

Beside, I think we still have the capacity to do a Suez 57 operation

  3. LCAT (EDA-R) is a smart design ,a catamaran that is twice as fast as the craft its replacing and seaworthy(sea state 6-7). Compared to any hover craft its logistical footprint is minute

    1. I agree, this would provide a great relief for the LCAC's. They could also be an excellent asset for soft power projection. I do wonder how much quieter it is then the LCAC?

  4. Sol current and future amphib assaults will come it different sizes, i.e. be "scalable".
So to answer your question and go along with fabsther, YES the French can do the assaults THEY want to do. Whether they or the USN has enough fast landing craft is a good thing to look into. But more FLC is mainly a matter of how long to acquire and build.

Look at what the next LCAC aka SSC will do and cost and how long it will take to get to IOC? So the Navy Marine team isn't in such a good place now especially with the old LCAC wearing out and costing tens of millions $$ to keep going.

For reference purposes, the ERDA aka L-Cat lifts 78 LY at 20 kts. The SSC will lift 74 tons at 35 kts. I all the modern landing craft the payload Decreases as the Speed increases. And my little chart has even put a price tag on them as yet.

L-Cat would be GREAT complements to both the LCAC/SSC and the LCUs fitting in-between those craft in capability.
