It seems Serbia is
upgrading refining its 8 wheeled MRAPs.
Interesting. By going to what are in essence multi-wheeled truck platforms, the market for APCs has opened dramatically. In its rush to lower operating costs, the Western Allies have created competition for their domestic weapons manufacturers. They'll never meet the low costs of the developing countries and because of the numerous production sharing contracts of the past, they've essentially taught their comp how its done. I can't wait to watch what happens when China turns its full attention to armored vehicles. We'll be in a hurt locker of our own making...sorta like what we're seeing in aviation.
Lazar 2 is supposedly well under 1/2 the price of a typical 8x8 and was been designed with a customer in mind as far as i know first 15 pre production vehicles are going to Pakistan
ReplyDeletei didn't know the price but when i look at 2000 plus MRAPs being destroyed in Afghanistan and all our allies that need them it makes me sigh.
DeleteProblem with MRAPS is that there are so many different types around that even if you give them for free who will maintain them and i bet that many of those scraped are damaged if not beyond repair at least beyond field repair.
DeleteI don't believe in governments investing in domestic production (read state subsidy) to get themselves out of debt like the French do. But if the UK would for the next 3 or 4 would just spend a few billion or so of its overseas aid budget on setting up a domestic production for this vehicle it would be very good for the Army. But they won't........
ReplyDeleteThis is meant as a lower cost 'second line' vehicle more along the lines of the commando and not a direct competitor to likes of Patria AMV ,price ,protection make it more of an sustainable alternative to MRAPS that were never meant to be of much use after the war.
ReplyDeleteSerbian armament industry has made quite a reputation for itself and is a neutral player so attractive to the customers who are wary of ither US or Russian influence so i reckon they have a chance to sell this one or at least the licence for it.
