I must admit, whenever I see shiny boots and buttons during perfect lockstep marching, I wonder if all those hours couldnt have been better spent on the fireing range, the assault course, or doing battalion level exercises on the training fields.
Of course those hours would have been better spent doing that.
Unfortunately that stuff normally costs money or those facilities are hard to come by or there are risks associated.
Plus there is always someone, somewhere that will swear up and down that polishing boots, standing inspections and practicing going from port arms to right shoulder arms builds discipline and character making you better at combat than running the O-course ten times in a row.
If shiny black rifles make sense, so do shiny black boots.
