I didn't know about the British and German bases in Canada until recently. To think each had a mechanized battalion+ of equipment in Canada and rotated battalions in and out is pretty cool.
It makes me think why the US didn't travel up to Canada and visit these training grounds to conduct joint exercises. Imagine the yields of having British, German, Canadian and American mechanized units training together on the Canadian plains.
well i'll be cursed and ridiculed for it but our President is from Asia. and because his ties with that region are so strong i think he has a special affinity for it and its being reflected in our defense strategy.
why else do the lazy thing and have the military make the swing instead doing the behind the scenes work of stabalizing the region while its going wobbly. but back to the question...i think he views exercises with the European countries as a throwback to the old way of doing business and this guy is about change. no matter how disruptive, all he can see is change. which is a big reason why his type of change won't last.
The Germans left Manitoba around 2002 iirc, so its just 1 RCHA and 2 PPCLI here in Shilo. Interestingly, we traded free access to Suffield for our four Victoria class SSKs. Suffield is alco known for being a live fire CW/BW range until the 1960's nd having massive reserves of oil and gas.
We have National Guard units come north routinely., and we go south all the time. The B-52s often come up north to drop for our JTACs as it is closer to come from Minot to Shilo/Suffield/Wainwright than your own ranges and our dudes get to stay current.
