Tactics and training wise, yes. Hardware wise, no.
The PLA's making progresses in hardware leaps and bounds. However, the PLA's training and tactic is lagging. The problem of the PLA being a coalition of 7 independent militaries with 7 separate commands and military academies to train cadets independently, plus the lack of military exchanges with the likes of the US, NATO, and Russia plus the lack of real world combat experience in decades makes the PLA weak in the software side.
The most obvious example is the Sino-Vietnamese war of 1979, during which the PLA was defeated by poorly armed Vietnamese troops. Whie the PLA was better armed and more numorous, its troops lacked combat experiences, and the commanders were no better than the troops they were commanding, so the Vietnamese troops with real combat experiences dating back only 4 years ago was able to defeat the PLA.
SlowMan, In terms of tankers/AWACs, hey have the technology for refueling, but nowhere near the scale of ability and resources that the US possessed even in the late 1950's.
Look at SAC in the 60's. Hundreds of B52 and B47s on 15-minute alert, supported by hundreds of KC-135s and KC-97s. Even if China had the tankers, I doubt they could do that with even their fighters on a fraction of that scale for longer than 24 hours.
Not at all, because all of Chinese neighbors excluding Pakistan are China's enemies. This would actually drive those leaders into the arms of the US for protection. Burma is the prime example of this, where its leaders are trying to embrace the West in order to counter growing Chinese influences in Burma.
I disagree. I doubt they're driving them into our arms. We have shown no resolve nor strength in the Asia-Pacific for the past 12 years. So, why would minor nations turn to us for protection when we can't seem to get boots on the ground, planes in the air and ships roving the seas in the Asia-Pacific?
If anything I think the leaders of Asia-Pacific (minus Pakistan) will try to placate and appease China if they can't fund their own defense forces to a credible level.

I agree, USA had, still might have some good cards to play with China going to fast with the military moves but we have so little leadership in Washington on both sides of the aisle that China would have to really screw up big time to scare the little nations and others into our arms...we have really nothing to offer by words and an overpriced heavy strike bomber...oh yeah, and LCS! ROFL!
China has their own Red Flag now. If China can download 4 Terabytes of info on the F35, how hard was it for them to get info about US Red Flag,etc....? US Red Flags were cancelled in 2011,2012 and this year. Weapon officer training was suspended so I think there will no graduating class this year. This is the sort of stuff that is very perishable and we shouldn't take it for granted that our pilots are better than theirs. China has flown to Turkey on a exercise a few years back and has pilots trained in Brazil, they spy on our troop movements and how we operate around the world so they should have a clear idea on how to copy us and practice against it. Not that hard.
Anyone who frequents Chinese military websites will tell you that it looks like every week there are pictures of ground troops training, exercising, tanks firing,etc...China has developed their own version of NTC and they appear to be sending troops thru it on a regular basis. Also pictures of troops landing on beach is quite frequent.
Can't say much about their Navy, not sure how much and often they sail...

Very impressive. Great for PR. Should influence the minds of the Prime Ministers and Presidents in the region.
