DeleteThe CEO and board of directors don't give a shit about US military. It's all about the bottom line on the juiciest contract ever and what that does to the bottom line and the effect that will have on their stock options. Not that I blame them, that's their job and salary/retirement money. As much as they are concerned, US DoD could wipe out virtually every other program, as long as F35 is safe, they are OK with it.
ReplyDeleteThat's my big problem, not as much with JSF program as much as DoD and our politicians have completely abdicated their duties, responsibility and are endangering troops in future wars because LMT has pretty much decided that F35 is more important than just about anything else. Our generals and politicians shouldn't be taking orders from LMT. We need a balanced and well armed force, not just a bunch of F35s and 40 to 60 year old crap for everybody else....
To be honest, I doubt LM thinks they are going to lose, the damn program is already in the "too big to allow to fail" bracket. They know they are going to win and they are milking the thing for all it's worth. Which is the same as what NICO is saying.
ReplyDeleteAnd the damn shit of it is by Congressional law, the US can't even outsource to put LM in their place. So for the US, it's LM or nothing. And LM knows it. And are gouging the US government. Remember Admiral Rickover and the shit he got from General Electric when he tried to hold them up to standards? Now it's LM's turn to rob the US.

Except for the fact that LM dragged a whole lot of other countries into the deal with the US. If they closed down the project, the US would have in effect lost all the monies the other countries poured into it.
DeleteCan American pride handle the PR and diplomatic black eye when the other countries publish "American mismanagement loses 4 Billion for nothing"? The US has no choice but to carry it through, it is other people's money at stake too. Unless the other participants sue the US for 4 Billion in damages? It's less painful to carry the F-35 to term than to bail out now. Which sucks. Should have shut it down years back. Less expensive. They're committed the instant they took money from non-US sources and put American reputation on the line.
Poor US debt is going to have to get worse just to get out of the mess LM made.
To be honest, I think it would be best to swallow our pride and pay those nations back exactly how much they put into the program. Yes, that would be expensive, but it certainly wouldn't be over $800 billion dollars like the cost of moving forward with the F-35 would be. I think we're only at $80 billion sunk costs right now. We would still save a lot of money. Besides, a lot of our allies already get billions of dollars from us for defense anyway.

ReplyDeleteOur generals are complicit, when USAF announces that they pretty much will never buy another 4Gen fighter EVER, aren't they pretty much saying it's JSF from LMT or nothing? What kind of policy is that? That's like going to a car dealership, saying to the vendor, "I will accept whatever price you want because that's the car I want and I won't see any other car dealers." And then you act surprised the dealer sticks it up your ass?
Politicians that always cry about competition and business? They do pretty much everything possible to destroy it! For an extra billion or two, we could have had GE compete with PW. Maybe we could have competed the AESA between Raytheon and Northrop. If you really believe in open competition, why can't we outsource to best bidder some of the airframe,etc..? But no, we protect LMT from open competition. USAF never had a competition after the initial selection, we had plenty of fly offs in the 60s and 70s, we never really put LMT to the test and told them to go out there and prove how good F35 is. USAF handed their procurement budget on a platter and told LMT to carve out as much as they please, well, LMT is carving a MAJOR chunk out!
I for one want a fixed price contract, no "cost overruns" bullshit. You overrun, you pay for it. In Admiral Rickover's case when he clashed with General Dynamic Electric's yard manager who fled the country for accepting kickbacks, the yard manager stated that it was common practice to underbid the project, then bill the government for overruns, which is bullshit. Why bother with bidding if you are going to screw up the bid price anyway? And people wonder why the accounts are never in order, the government allocates funds based on your submission, then find out that it is "not enough" and you end up with scads of lawyers fees arguing about it. Try this shit in any other industry and the judge will kick you out of court if you are lucky, slam you with contempt of court if you are not. This bad business practice has to stop.
