I just noticed it. Do you see that weapon mount? Looks to me like its sporting an ATK 25mm light weight chain gun and a 7.62 machine gun. The 25mm cannon is the stunner though. I've always like the concept, but never thought that anyone would bite. The fact that Patria is showcasing the weapon on its concept vehicle is telling. We might see this on a allied or US vehicle soon.
Remote Weapons stations with a 25mm cannon is a done deal. Israel, Turkey, and Romania have been using Rafeal Overhead Weapons Stations (OWS) with 25mm cannons, and BAE's Tactical Remote Turret (TRT) is also a proven, deployed, system (also by mulitple countries).
ReplyDeleteWhy the US Army didn't put a 20 or 25mm RWS on the Stryker family of vehicles is beyond me, although it could have do to with the C-130 transportable requirement. I'd give up being C-130 transportable (there are a lot of C-17s out there) to have a real vehicle killing cannon mounted on a Stryker.
That's not a 25mm cannon: the 25mm LWS fires the 25x59mm grenade, same cartridge as the XM-25 and totally different from the much more powerful 25x137mm cannon round.
ReplyDeleteStill a very nifty weapon and, like Sol, I've been surprised it hasn't gotten more traction but it is a .50 cal alternative, not in the same league with the 25mm/30mm OWS you're comparing it to.
