Project Pluto.

Scientist in the '50 and '60 were some crazy bastards.

How do you even think stuff like this up?

A nuclear powered, ram jet missile that carries nuclear weapons...drops them on desginated targets...zooms along at tree top level and moves so fast that the shock wave from it passing could kill...radioactive particles would be dripping from its exhaust so it would poison people that survived...and because its nuclear powered some scientist recommended that they simply fly it over the Soviet Union so that it could continue its killing spree while slowly running out of nuclear fuel.

Read a great article on this weapon system at Jalopnik.

  2. Well, ethics were certainly different 50 years ago. For example, it was perfectly acceptable to deny services and education based on one's skin color 50 years ago, but not even the most rightwing conservatives would call that acceptable today. Gay marriage was unthinkable back into 60s, but it is legal at Federal level too.

Those scientists were living in a dooms day era, where they could perish tomorrow and were developing doomsday weapons to fight a doomsday war with no tomorrow. Different standards apply in developing doomsday weapons.

    1. i get what you're saying but even though i'm no progressive and can be called a social dinosaur this stuff is shocking....i mean really? flying a cruise missile so low and so fast that the shockwave kills? dripping radiation out the tailpipe to poison people for generations? doing it for years at a time in order to fully eradicate a people?

even for me thats pretty far out there...and i'm a barbarian.
