These old balistic masks were also used by SWAT teams in US decade or two ago but as they do not offer protection to the eyes these have long ago been replaced with bullet prof visors
As these guys do not seem to be underfunded these are just for show i doubt they are still used operationally.
Hmmm.... I wonder how hard it is to put on an NBC mask over something like that? Surely its not out of the realm of possibility that rioters could make or steal tear gas or worse of their own, right?
This was never meant to be used for riot control ,pure and simple this was 'developed' out of 70's Hockey Goalie mask ,and as mentioned was popular in 80's-90's for use in SWAT for the guys doing the entry(breaching shotgun). Now day's any outfit using it is just playing tacticool for the looks as the mask is outdated, unergonomic, and offers little protection. So you can write this off along the lines of parading around in ghillie suits and carrying 50'cal sniper rifles on parade.
It gets the job done(which is to stop pistol bullets), even if it doesn't look "tacticool". Plus, the coverage is good, it weighs less than transparent visor for the same level of ballistic protection, and does not affect weapon shouldering as much. Intimidation factor may be desirable in some scenarios, too. So why not, it makes perfect sense to me.
Dear God, what are they trying to make them look like? Serial killers?
ReplyDeleteVoorhees ? is that you man ?
ReplyDeleteWait... Is that black make-up around their eyes?
