I can see units such as the 82 Airborne Div using this in the same way the French use the ERC 90 Sagaie. The 82 Airborne. It would have to be able to load and unload off of the C-17
It is mortar, no direct fire capability, wiesel family is nice piece of airborne equipment, but the fact is that it is outdated system. I have feeling that future with combined - guns/mortars like amos or nona. No doubt they will replace 120 mm towed/sp mortars at batalion level.
The Wiesel 2 mortar system is capable of direct fire and Network Centric Warfare! The system was introduced to German Army in 2011. Therefore I do not think it is outdated. The smaller Wiesel 1 with a 20 mm cannon was introduced in the late 1980s.
I have my thought on troop carriers and wheels with big guns... I think that wheeled armored vehicle with transportation purpose (troop carrier, mortar carrier, med evac, command and control) must be forward engine, and the MGS/Wheeled tank must have it's engine in a back, like a tank. This stabilises the vehicle, allows to have more thick frontal armor, main cannon have bigger depression angles and it can be 0.5 meters lower.
Something like that, would be perfect as an Infantry support weapon. It's would be similar to the French ERC-90
ReplyDeleteHere is a PDF of the cannon and it's stat's.
ReplyDeletenot a bad vic or weapon system....could get the family of vics and make the 82nd a mobile airborne.

DeleteWhat about an 120 mm able to offload two at once of a C-130? (3 fit in a C-130J-30)?

Even one fit in a CH-53.
