Note: Until I see these PD's going after hardcore gang bangers, drug dealers, and the like (instead of getting tough with average citizens having an "oh shit" moment) I will continue to rail against law enforcement getting these vehicles.

Citizens need to get a cruel fact into their heads.
An active shooter situation will be a roll of the dice if they behave the way that authorities recommend. Take a mall for example. Shots are fired they recommend you get inside a store and lock yourself in. Shootings as a school? Find a room and lock yourself inside.
Meanwhile the Police are getting to the scene, securing the perimeter, waiting for reinforcements to arrive, allowing the SWAT Team to decide exactly how they're going to conduct their breach or entry, moving SWAT into position to do the plan, SWAT moves from the entry or breach point to the suspect, fire fight ensues, and finally the situation ends.
If you're lucky, you are facing a bad guy with a gun, without Police support for at BEST 45 min or more.
An MRAP won't serve as barricade for the public. Its just a toy. At least how they're being used now.

The Columbia Police Department has acquired a new armored vehicle for use in dangerous situations.I wonder who gives these LEO's their talking points. Every statement from every agency is practically copy and paste...they're all the same.
The mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicle was donated through a U.S. Department of Defense program.
The program gives surplus military equipment to state and local civilian law enforcement agencies free of charge.
“The Police Department MRAP will be a barrier between the public and a hostile person or situation such as a barricaded suspect with weapons who may be threatening someone’s life. We want to protect citizens as best as possible,” Interim Police Chief Ruben Santiago said.
The MRAP is bullet-proof and seats nine officers including one in the turret.
Summit Paint and Body donated services to paint the vehicle, which is currently assigned to the city’s SWAT Team and was displayed in Monday’s Veterans Day parade.

Exactly. Police MRAPS are just big blue trucks that they lug out of Public day, and MAYBE use in a once in a blue moon hostage crisis. PDs are generally envious of other PDs stuff, so it makes sense that they would take a free MRAP. Hell, they would LOVE free helicopters, but I doubt that would happen.
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing inherently more dangerous about the MRAP in the photo than the MACK truck behind it.
The free helos- it's happened. My local county police got several used Kiowas for free. Only one is flyable now, the rest they use for parts. Their primary mount is a 412 - which they subsequently hard-landed - not sure if it is back in service yet.
ReplyDeletehehe... Those MRAPs aint got nothing on good old Sheriff Arpaio
ReplyDeleteIn Oregon City, Ore two weeks ago an 88-year old man set his house on fire and was outside with a revolver. When the Police showed up he shot a reserve officer in the face dropping the officer where he stood. The place went crazy with police activity. All residents were told to lock themselves in their homes via reverse 911 calls. Then, for the next hour the police effectively sat tight and waited for the SWAT team to arrive and deploy. Unfortunately, by the time that happened the officer who had been shot was in such a bad state that he ended up not making it. Think about that... they sat and did nothing to recover the fallen officer until they could get the SWAT guys with all their toys to go in and get their guy! It makes my blood boil. The police spokesman explained it away saying that their primary concern was to ensure nobody else got hurt! My father was a police officer and all my life growing up I took comfort in the fact that the other officers were there and they would always look out for each other. Now we come to this... Sad, just plain sad. They want to play solder, but to your point, only when pushing around the unarmed and easily intimidated. I was near the scene that day. I saw more than fifty patrol cars from agencies all around the region and yet nobody did what that officer needed to save his life. An old man with a revolver against dozens of armed police officers and they stood by and let the officer die. There is something seriously wrong with the evolving mindset of our country's police agencies especially in the command ranks.
ReplyDeleteAt one point patrol officers were being taught to wait for the first 4 to make the scene and then make entry. Now the new thing is go in alone or wait for a partner during an active shooter. The bad part is very few agencies teach anything more than shooting at a paper target to get the officers qualified to the minimum standards. I see it going very bad.
ReplyDeleteI am sure the citizens of Columbia sleep better at night knowing that their local cops have a new bright and shiny MRAP. Who gets to pay for maintenance and upkeep?
ReplyDeleteAre there any active duty LEOs on the blog than can speak to the current state of SOP regarding the situation in Oregon City? Or at least in a general way. I perceive a change in doctrine (and attitude) but that just might be me looking in.
