Above you see two examples of everyday carry. I'm not trying to judge the individual choices that these guys made, but want to look at it in a broader light.
Are we doing everyday carry right? I contend that we're not. If you look (and I'm still being general) you find a few items in common that MOST (not all...I'm not putting a number on it...yeah I'm being vague) people carry.
* Knife
* Pen
* Phone
* Laptop/Tablet
* First Aid Kit
* Flashlight
* Wallet
* Para cord Bracelet
* Watch
* Handgun
* Spare Magazine
And the list goes on.
I remember a time when guys would bitch about all the shit women carried in their purses and now it appears that guys are doing the same damn thing.
What the fuck happened?
Did we get feminized on the sleigh and we're simply doing a male version of a female thing? Are we actually carrying what's needed?
No link to a Nutnfancy EDC video? :)
ReplyDeletePerhaps we should ask the question, what did our grandfathers carry?
I am always surprised by how little Americans appear to carry in their cars seeing the distances you guys have to cover even in "local" terms.
Then again look at the current situation in CONUS with this "Polar Vortex". It will be a question if tens get killed never mind hundreds in a population of several hundred millions so how prepared to you have to be?
As an outsider I find the topic of CCW fascinating. But I still wonder about the ergonomics and logistics of carrying a lump of plastic and metal weighing a pound or so everywhere and I am on the large side of average but not a big bloke by any means. I can understand why some put comfort before security even if I don't condone it.
Very interesting.
good idea Steve. i think i will put up one of his videos on EDC. the guy carries so much gear its crazy! also i might not have been clear but i consider an vehicle emergency kit to be different from EDC. if i lived in an area that experienced real winter conditions (not once every 25 years) i'd have different things in my truck than i do now.
Deletebut the bigger issue to me is i think we're all being sold a bill of goods. Bug out bags for example. who is going to evacuate and then go off into the woods to camp out for days or weeks? no one. if you have to displace because of a hurricane (a threat where I live) then either you have funds set aside so you can drive to safety.....in this instance camping out in a safe area might be advisable but a filled truck or trailer would be the way to go.
i just think we're all getting jobbed.
I hear you what about EDC and car kit. I sort of class them as one. Rarely in the West do we go anywhere without the car, well most anyway, and the car is rarely parked to far away. If the car wasn't there I would be carrying extra kit anyway. Rather like that much discussed topic on YouTube the "truck gun"! As a Marine you probably are exceptional in your preparedness for emergencies.
ReplyDeleteAs for being jobbed well it made me think of this from your side of the Pond,

Not so much the revolver, more the yellow grips, the yellow box, ....... good grief.
THAT's EXACTLY WHAT I"M TALKING ABOUT!!!! i can't imagine any person with even a passing knowledge of the outdoors and firearms even thinking about buying a package like that. but you see tons of people doing it. more money than brains i guess, but between that and the Bear Gryll's nonsense and others (sorry i have a special hardon for that fraud) its obvious that the gun and preparedness culture is being corrupted.
DeleteThose are cool ideas to carry as well. I do like Maxpedition's EDC bag including the Jumbo™ Versipack®

My BIG question is if you carry a gun and your going to carry any type of med kit shouldn't it be able to do more than cover a paper cut? If you carry for a gun fight carry min med kit to deal with a gunshot wound. All you need can fit in a cargo pocket.
ReplyDeletePeople that like Glocks have to find a way to carry the 30-some round mag. Is the imminent threat taking short pause to develop? Seek cover now and put in the extended mag.
ReplyDeleteWell Sol, I have a purse and you don't want to know... what's in it. It gets me through the day though. grin.
