Recruiting might slip in the future...and I'll help it!

via Army Times.
“Part of the challenge is … the number of those individuals [eligible to serve] is dropping a little bit, but more importantly, the propensity of those individuals is going down,” said Marine Maj. Gen. Mark Brilakis, commander of Marine Corps Recruiting Command.
He told lawmakers that among the 30 million young Americans between the ages of 17 and 24, fewer than 1 million are actually healthy enough to serve and eager to talk to a recruiter about a military career.
As a result, Marine recruiters are spending some of their time selling young people on the idea of a military career, targeting those who are more difficult to recruit, Brilakis said.
Read the entire article for yourself, but I can state this without hesitation.

I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND MILITARY SERVICE TO ANY YOUNG MAN.

Once I did.  Once I thought that it was a great place for young men to serve their country.  No more.

After the draw down in force thats about to hit, they're going to have many more anti-recruiter spokesmen.

Personally, I can't wait to see it happen.

SIDENOTE:  No.  I am not "rooting for my country to fail"...but I am looking forward to the architects of our defense realizing that they can't screw with retirees, vets and active duty members without paying a price.  Jack with retiree pensions?  Screw with VA benefits?  Conduct a reduction in force on people that have done tour after tour after tour...wrecking their home lives? It isn't right.  Especially since it appears that the only portion of America that is being asked to sacrifice are members of the military.  Yeah.  I look forward to their pain.

    1. oh i'd tell a chick to join it in a heartbeat. tell her to ask for the infantry. tell her she should go recon and MARSOC if she gets the chance.

and wait for her to come back with both knees snapped and her hips replaced.

    2. Wait, the level of training will be lowered down to be more "fair" and after she survive that she can take that one free year that will be standard then for every woman in every arms. After that year she will born a child and receive another year off, and then another one... then she will come back to became some important officer and lead other woman in to the battlefield for full combat rights in internet... and after she will broke a knee because those high shoos can be dangerous she will will be retired and get full grade payroll to the rest of her life.

      Wow, sometimes I scare myself.

  2. The problem is that the standards for US Military enlistment have not kept up with the times. The standards were written in the 50's & 60's. Todays Youth can't even meet the standards that were set in 50's & 60's. I think the US Military needs to update their standards for the 21st century in terms of enlistment standards and medical standards.

    1. So....just let people in because the "deserve" it? our standards suck, and they are even worse staying in these days.

Hell if you have a EAS is FY14, you must have your reenlistment pkg in by 28 Feb or you will not even get a fair look. The drawdown is goign to force alot of experience and good ground combat marines out, so we can have a Plane and a bunch of "cyber" marines.

We have a horrible ratio of Support to Combat personal, some people need to reread Starship Troopers.

    2. The problem is that our today's youth is not what it once was in the 50's,60's & 70's. Even today's youth can't even meet the enlistment standards that were set in 50's,60's & 70's and that's due to health, medical, physical and social issues.

    3. Changing standards because men became pussies is not helping mate, that's only acquiescence to this process. From the beginning of any organized military force the idea of "We change boy in to men" was primary goal, whole boot camp is design to break weak civilian body and reshape it in to proper material for future soldier.

Today young's are not different from us in our not that long ago young times. This is not a degradation of species, there is a degradation of mind. As Sol like to say, pussyfication of whole male society.

Society is weak, "western" word is on the road of being total demoralization... dear gods we will became frog eaters.

And I agree with John about reread Starship Troopers, but I'm have fascist convictions. I will not say that I'm fascist because in my country this is forbidden by law but still, vision of Robert A. Heinlein is close to my heart.

    4. The Army of world war two fame was reduced and it's trraining made fair and easy, as was the Marines (Ribbon Creek debacle) training was made easier and the standards lowered.
Then came Korea, and Task Force Smith and the fact that no American Army personell was up to fighting much less surviving in a real gawdam war even with a third world nation such as North Korea.
The Nukes held back for political reasons and the fighting general of WW2 fired for even suggesting attacking the bridges coming out of China carrying Chinese troops and gear into NorK.
Results a lost battle, lost men and a three year war that resulted in a stalemate that lasts till today.
Lower the standards BUT "BE ADVISED" The enemy and the Gods of war will not.
And a whole slew of gays, men and women are gonna die while we watch on the TV.

  3. I keep saying this, but you could take all of the soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen that are about to retire or be retired and form the core of a new military that would be a world-beater, unfettered by traditions, service rivalry, branch loyalty or brown-nosers. But our military doesn't want talented people, it wants expensive toys.

They should hang a sign out front of the Pentagon that says, "We want Toys, not Boys"

Seriously, I don't understand how anyone would want to join the military these days. It doesn't develop leaders, it promotes ass-kissers and politicians, and it shits on those who have sacrificed the most to save a few bucks so they can buy new gold-plated fiascos. The Pentagon is just an overfunded, undisciplined bunch of corporate wannabes who are waiting their turn to sell-out.

  4. The phuc's in Office at this time see the military as just another bunch of murdering felons.
They wish to turn it into a French Foreign Legion type affair and invite our enemies and allies to join and fight for the US.
For US civilian's who wish military training and service they can change their names or join the penal Battalions.
Separating the citizens from the soldiers makes turning the soldiers loose on the civilian's that much easier. I understand that Posse Comitatus is considered dead.
currently it seems the HQ of our military is going along and do not represent the citizens anymore caring only for their careers, their pensions and possible political jobs afterwards.
Those HQ types who disagree or prefer the old oath to the constitution are quickly found out and find themselves retiring after some charge of misconduct.
It's fast becoming NOT THE United States Military anymore but just the Military of the democrats and republican's idea of a Federal Police force writ large.
No, I wouldn't advise anyone to join these clowns military and fight for these selfish bass turds who will leave POW's behind and allow Ambassador's to be killed without rescue.
These current government phucs ain't worth fighting, dying or being maimed for.
let them fiight their own wars, they got John Forbes f'n Kerry to fight for them now something he did not wish to do in Vietnam why possible need for anyone else is there?
    Phuc em let it burn.

  5. "Get a job, keep it for a year, and then go on unemployment and collect other benefits." I heard this from a guy I know about a week ago. He's 20 and keep in mind that I'm only 19 now. I used to consider this guy a friend. So why bring that up? Because he's more of the majority of those his age than not.

So when it comes to recruiting, would you even want that guy? A lot of people my age will do anything but hard work. They are unemployed because they won't do physical labor (not all but many, many). A lot of them are overweight. Or only sign up for selective service long enough to get their driver's license.

So those few who do volunteer know that Boot camp will be hard. Most of them are not used to doing more work than playing X-Box or Playstation (okay I'll concede they might make great drone operators - some of them), but put them in the field of battle and you'd better not be expecting to win your war.

My hat's off to those who do serve, and are not lazy, because someone has to protect the idiots that can't serve or won't. It doesn't help that those who are now serving get these little rules of engagement that differ depending on whether or not the politicians at home think that the war they send these guys off to is worth winning.

Among those that are fit and not lazy that I've talked to - that might consider joining the military - there are always the questions about whether or not their service would even be appreciated and it is pointed out to me that in the last 50 years, only the first Gulf War vets were respected when they came home. The Viet Nam vets were not I'm told, and those returning today are hardly mentioned - except on Memorial Day or by other vets.

Something I've heard again and again is "Why Join?"
