ANKARA — Turkey’s leading armored vehicles manufacturer, Otokar, has said that it won a $24.6 million contract from the United Nations.The big news here is that the UN buys armored vehicles. Who knew? Are tanks and helicopters next? Additionally where does an international organization store such things and who maintains them?
In a news release March 6, Otokar said the contract was for an unspecified number of the company’s Cobra vehicles. The UN will use the Cobras in peacekeeping operations, the company said.
Cobra, used by the armies of 15 different countries, is Otokar’s best known vehicle. Turkish security forces use the four-wheel-drive Cobra for reconnaissance and area control.
Otokar reported 40 percent growth in 2013, with exports of $117 million.
The company also is the developer of the Altay, Turkey’s first indigenous, new-generation main battle tank. In 2008, Otokar signed a $500 million contract with the Turkish procurement office, the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries, to produce four prototypes under the Altay program.
I find the idea of this ... interesting.
As far as the Cobra? Appears to be to be a great vehicle. The fact that its amphibious is just another plus.
Cobra ia cheaper than up-armored Hummvee but is designed for the outset as an armored car with hummvee drivetrain.
ReplyDeleteU N has had some sort of light armored vehicles as long as I can remember. We would see their white APCs in Lebanon in the 80s. They often got in our way, actually. Gave the terrorists time to take off.
ReplyDeleteyeah but those vehicles were operated by the nations that contracted out to do the peacekeeping work. not UN owned. this appears to be new but i'm having a hard time finding info on the UN buying weapons/vehicles.
DeleteProbably going to be used by countries that contribute lots of troops to UN peacekeeping operations, but don't have much in the way of heavy equipment - like Fiji.

Cobra is one of the best in his class, amphibious, can carry different type of weapon, v-shape, high performance in different terrains....
