Max Ordinate Academy So with all this "Molon labe" craze happening right now how many of you know what armored vehicles your town has and their weak points if they were to "come and take it!" ? |
Is that a Soviet Bloc era armored car being shown for Chico, CA???
Sidenote: I tracked it down. Its an OT-64.
Admittedly there is something inherently badass about your local town having a working OT-64 like that. But unless the town is some sort of drug cartel hotspot or something, only some cities need this sort of thing. Detroit would be a great proving ground for MRAPs now that i think about it.
ReplyDeleteThere doesn't seem to be much reason for tracks, maybe if you're surrounded by swamplands or something. But unless these swamps often feature smugglers from Central and South America, there still really isn't much of a need.
well if these vehicles are actually to save lives then the threat from flooding is more of an issue than gunmen. so tracked amphibious vehicles like the M113 make a certain amount of sense. especially in the deep south where flooding is a constant worry and hurricanes are a seasonal danger.
DeleteVery good point, I hadn't thought about that. There are wheeled armored vehicles that can do the same but the M113 is probably dirt cheap to buy in comparison.
DeletePro-tip from a Mountaineer: Don't build your house below sea level.
DeleteExcept they don't have an OT64. That is a photoshpped picture from a blog commenting on the Chico PD and Butte County Sheriff, and sharing, buying a $250,000 armoured vehicle. The blog said they could get an OT64 for $20,000, would be more fiscally prudent. http://www.norcalblogs.com/postscripts/2011/06/25/tanks-for-police/
ReplyDeletei didn't fact check it. just posted it. what vehicle do they have.
DeleteI've only seen one picture of it, and it's looks like a small armoured car (Brinks type), but can't make out the model, and I haven't seen it when I've been in Chico. Not a Bearcat, Gurkha, or Peacemaker, I seen others, but can't place it.. Beats the county dump truck they had to use at one incident, or the old one they taped body armour to the sides for protection. At least they only have one county wide, Chico maintains it, and it shared among neighboring agencies.
DeleteNow San Francisco PD has an interesting one, a Sacaren FV603 APC. Talked to the driver one time, and I said I liked his APC (I'm a sucker for old armour), he told me it was a Rescue vehicle. Um yeah right. I don't think he cared for me pointing out, it was an Alvis FV603 Sacaren APC from the British Army, was built that, served the British as that, and always would be, no matter how PC SFPD wanted to be.
well said on that Sacaren! and bad on the SFPD for being more PC than historically accurate. oh and good catch on the vehicle. i never want to post stuff in error, edgy stuff, stuff to grab attention or stuff that needs attention but never erroneous stuff. good job on that.
DeleteI won't start getting too worried about the police unless they start getting excess Bradleys.
ReplyDeleteThe DHS on the other hand...
Rescue vehicles and police vehicles should be painted in the same colors as their other vehicles. In any event, other than a limited class of small arms, I don't know how they intend to protect the crews and passengers in those things.
ReplyDeleteSo Chico does have gang problems, in addition there is a muslim training facility within 20 miles of Chico.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen it,but one can google it. I think it just say's northern ca, but its in the chico area.
This just happened locally to me. If what I was told last night is accurate then the Special Operation Group's LAV was pretty much destroyed in the blast
