    Using tech like Rotordyne would be safe and low cost ,using an existing airframes like C130

    1. the Rotodyne seems like an evolutionary dead end. i don't know the engineering but compound helicopters never took off as a solution to increasing speed.

Rotodyne never really had a market(short haul travel to inner city?) technologically autogyros work beyond any other VTOL concept(for at least 80 years now https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXbXDfD2liQ ) and are very safe (compoint driven rotors are just an evolution) and only real complaint Rotordyne couldn't fix was noise of the ram jet rotor engines.(but the downfall is probably more than anything else connected to the consolidation of UK aircraft industry post war where only few manufacturers survived. Imagine a tiltrotor trying to compete on civil market today,impossible outside bizjet or bizcopter market where the cost might not be the top priority.

      But thing is as simple as they get .This thing could get shoot at, engines blown shut and could still land safely ,helicopters can do that only in training in real life engine out mostly ends up as fatal crash. Tilt rotor is the least proven technology (only 2 models V22 and Augusta 609 , would like to see land with one engine shut down.,just imagine all the long shafting and gearbox needed for engine redundacy ,can't imagine what those the tubines would kick up on landing, or propeler design that big for that mater.

    3. glad you mentioned the 609. its gaining alot of attention and will be big in the civilian market. they're already pushing it on the oil and gas industry for flights out to oil rigs, coast guards are getting pitched and of course executive transport.

    5. i beg to differ. the X-2 by Sikorsky has that record. the X3 did its thing but it didn't last....

    6. Fabsther is right X3 broke X-2's record (293 mph vs 287 mph) an X-2 was as slim tandem cockpit craft with no potential use X3 on the other hand was a full sized Dauphin frame so potentially useful size.

      One issue that will continue to hamper the future coaxial rotor like Sikorsky is rotorblade flex look at how far these are spaced with Kamov.

      And true its a bit like rotordyne but evolved out of the helicopter rather than airplane. In any case a low cost low risk devlopment compared to tiltrotor.

    7. i'm sorry. i wasn't clear. the freaking X3 isn't a helicopter. its a compound helicopter ....

      a type of aircraft that derives both lift and propulsion from one or two sets of horizontally revolving overhead rotors. It is capable of moving vertically and horizontally, the direction of motion being controlled by the pitch of the rotor blades.

  4. I wonder what the weight penalty will be for this one..... Although the video seems to indicate no swinging wing for storage, so that will save a lot of weight.

  6. I wonder about that huge rotor. Would a ducted fan-jet (even 2 on each wing) provide comparable levels of lift while allow normal take-off from available runways?

    The biggest thing I hate about the Osprey is the incredible noise it emits. Besides the fragility, the ridiculous rotor-wash, the rather small cabin space, the lack of armament, the maintenance requirement,....

    1. you and your colleagues did some great work on this vid. the one on the MARESK sea base concept is going up tomorrow. are you all still hard at work producing new stuff?

    2. Great question! The seabasing concept reached its zenith around 2006 and has sort of fallen out of favor, so there hasn't been much more than the conceptual stuff we were working on at the time. But there was a lot of intellectual activity going on (as a transportability/deployability engineer, I was heavily involved in this) nonetheless.

      I am still a huge proponent of developing expeditionary-based logistics systems for all of us forces, not just the Marines.
