Prince of Wales will not be sold, maybe put in reserve but likely both will be operated at the expense of HMS Ocean. AEW will be performed by adapted Merlin helicopters.
Yep, the same French wich have a nuclear carrier operating since 2000 (before that they have 2 light carriers from the 50's) with their own made embarked aviation ? At least they don't need CGI pics to see those things in action and they know they will have a valuable plane (Rafale M) for their unique carrier for the next 25 years. It's quite different to the situation of building two big and empty (where is the F35 B ?) carriers and not even be sure if you could afford operate them not in the near future but after completion.
What brit politicians have done to the legendary Royal Navy is not a shame, is a crime-
Not going to argue that the UK government has handled the defence of the relm well. The point I was making is that whilst the French have a mini nuclear carrier, they can only afford the capability part time. I am confident that whilst on paper the CVFs would be better STOBAR the fact we should be able to operate both is better than one.
They are going to have a helluva a hard time selling the Prince of Wales without CATOBAR or even STOBAR when the time comes (and it will).
ReplyDeleteWho else can afford even a single STOVL carrier with F-35Bs? Besides the USMC, of course...
A carrier like this needs to have an E-2. No CATOBAR, no E-2. Makes it an expensive helicopter carrier.

Not gold standard, but still darn good and better than putting all your eggs in one basket like the French.
