ikr! this airplane rocks so hard! and the funny thing is that since we're stuck with the MV-22, we could use this plane alot more than the AH1Z or definitely the UH-1Y! want to escort a MV-22? good luck doing that in the AH-1Z. it would be easy in the Charger. even better? its stats indicate that it could take off from the America class LHA!
I watched this takeoff from Lindbergh Field in the summer of 1965. This was at the east edge of MCRD San Diego and I was hand-washing clothes with the rest of the recruit platoon. There must have been a good headwind, because the aircraft rolled less than 150 feet before climbing at 30 degrees. No smoothness, just rear back on its haunches and zoom up. It was the nosiest aircraft I have ever been near, which includes staring up the tailpipes of F-4s in afterburner, passing over the north end of DaNang field. (People extra short in 1st Marines got a few weeks of security company duty in lieu of R&R.)
