Note: I can't wrap my head around Marine Corps philosophy about the littoral zone. While the USMC is saying that it will be too dangerous for amphibs to get close to shore, the US Navy is designing a "battleship" to operate there and the LCS was originally touted as being perfect for fighting in that area.

Zumwalt is a mixed bag, good with the bad, what a ship. Looks quiet top heavy...
ReplyDeleteI thought they were saving weight by using a composite (including wood) superstructure?
DeleteIt has to look top heavy. It has to cover up that huge ship based radar with smooth radar absorbing stealth panels. Wether it only looks top heavy or actually is top heavy (Weight wise), we'll just have to see.
ReplyDeletewell, the egyptians built the pyramids like a triangle. Now its time for americans to build one that floats.
DeleteAny chance NHSTA will do roll test? Not that sure about this. Previous versions, I think had more radar, this may be a stupid question, but why not have a few big multi-purpose radar instead of lots of little ones? Raytheon has new AMDR radar system that is scalable!
ReplyDeleteI notice that if it was shorter some of the front, side radar wouldn't fit, also wonder if it being tall is also to help detect sea-skimming missiles sooner?
I still have my doubts about the hull design at rough seas.
ReplyDeleteAt the end of this video you can see a wave going over the helicopter deck: http://youtu.be/R-s3S3F8Mao

Here is a photo of the buttom of a DDG 1000:http://navalphotos.blogspot.de/2012_01_16_archive.html
Supposedly if this thing went out in a hurricane there is a real chance that it might actually roll over,
