Russian Airborne Forces In Action

Make note of the heavy armor (well we are talking airborne...heavy is relative) drop.  The USAF hasn't demonstrated heavy drop capability since the mid 90's.  Do they still have the capability?

  1. In russian VDV (Airborne) these vehicles used to be dropped manned and ready for action virtualy the moment they hit the ground. But as far as i know now they stopped that practice as well as employing retro rockets and now have an air cushion and more canopies instead

    2. Actually here's the BMD-4M that went into services.

It's basicly same BMD-4M with few changes. With biggest changes being adoption (come straight out of factory installed with every BMP-4M) of.applique layer of armour. Proof against 14.5 mm at range from the sides and aditiional protection everywhere else. Obviously still retaining abillity to swim and be dropped with said armour.

Here's a footage of it swimming.

There is a footage of it being air dropped somewhere but can't find it right now.

Some pics of BMD-4M were you can clearly see the armour

      BTW.

They are also working on a new sprut-SD (sprut-SDM) and a 120-mm and 152-mm self-propelled artillery. (probably all three will be based on BMD-4M chassi.)

  3. While at Airborne School in 1990, they had a demonstration of LAPES (Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System) with one of the old Sheridan tanks. Went horribly wrong, much to the delight of all of us students! Nothing like seeing a tank make a ball of itself as it tumbles ass over kilter down the dropzone!!!!
