Indian Navy P15A Destroyer Kolkata

I need to find the stats on this ship.

At a glance it looks like a first rate destroyer but looks can sometimes be deceiving.  It looks familiar but I just can't place it.

  1. kinda looks like the German sachsen class

  2. It is a formidable destroyer with stealth features and an Aegis class IAI EL/M-2248 MF-STAR AESA multi-function radar with BRAHMOS supersonic anti-ship/land attack cruise missiles and will be equipped with Barak 8 anti-air missiles. Kolkata class isn't based on any foreign design..

    1. Every ship is based on some foreign design. A hull shape is mainly based on Russian designs philosophy mixed with as tommo8993 said German Sachsen especially in main radar systems placement and AESA.

I did not notice any type of serious CIWS system on board, only old type of AK-630 without independent targeting system. Or I miss something?

    2. It has both AK-630 and Barak 1 for Close engagements and will have Barak 8 for long range ones..

  3. It's anti-ship capabilities are top notch thanks to the BRAHMOS, and it's AA capabilities are also pretty good thanks to the Barak missiles. The Indians really bought the best systems they could find (or made them themselves) and put them into one ship.

    1. At the price of 2 billions, for that price you could have afforded 3 FREMMS or 10 Incheons!

    4. (sorry previous message, first time using blogger, no edit option?)
As the FREMM cost does(800$), it is correct to develop local industry, but importing steel from Russia?and a crew of 325? right now you are an emerging country but taking in consideration the service life of ships it will eat capitals. Wouldn't have been better to take it more slowly?

  4. It looks familiar because of the distinctive radar/mast configuration, a configuration you see on many European ships, particularly german and scandanavian. I like that it has 4 CIWS with good coverage, you can't have 'too much ciws', more ciws=higher engagement rates and quicker skew-to-target-times, although it looks like overall missile payload is very small for its size, and no forward and aft CIWS is disappointing.

    1. Forgot to say, lacks the powerful sensor arrays seen in american ships... Although that would be waste on ship with few missiles.

    2. Well first of all I see no 3d search radar, no radar like the SMART-L, or S1850M, it lacks the powerfull large radar systems like SPY radar on Burkes, or AMDR. So I don't see where its radar is...

    3. The powerful SPY or AMDR equivalent radar will be the IAI EL/M-2248 MF-STAR AESA multi-function radar. The other sensors include Thales LW-08 D-band air search radar, IAI EL/M-2238 L-band STAR surveillance radar, BEL HUMSA-NG bow sonar and BEL Nagin active towed array sonar.

    4. We'll need to keep very good relations with Israel then, judging by all the electronics they have contributed here. Not a "Big" problem. A couple of Charitable and Hospital Missions to the Palestinian territories after the massacre and a Business as usual relationship with Israel.

  5. Off topic:

Finally a wise decision by the Pentagon. I'd be quite worried if they continued, but not surprised.

  6. Solomon, if you need to find stats in this ship then probably these links will do-

    http://www.naval-technology.com/projects/kolkata-class-guided-missile-destroyers/

    http://www.freewebs.com/jeffhead/aegisvesselsoftheworld/kolkata.htm

Short simple reviews with mention of all weapons and delivery timelines (Probable).

India's first steps to moving towards and making a 10,000 ton destroyer probably on the lines of Arloegh-Burke or Sejong The Great. In the second link you can actually compare most of the Aegin/Aegis Like ships together as regards VLS compartments, ASROC, Torpedoes, Electronics Suiets, Tonnage, CIWS Points, Aviation Capacity, Land/Air Attack ability etc. Thats where i saw Sejong The Great and by god........it is "The Great" as regards weapons/capability per ton. And I think thats the direction the Indian Navy wants to move in.

It wont take much to cripple the Pakis via the Navy route, so these bigger Project 15A,B Destroyers and Project 17 Frigates are being purpose built to check the Chinese. Secure the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) first and foremost. Then we can think about other stuff.

    All hands on deck.

    1. If the USA resists from "Donating" those Oliver-Hazard Perry class ships to Pakistan, the Shivalik and Delhi Class ships would be more than enough to deal with Pakistan. With the Talwar Class held in reserve. But we would need many more ships if we were to have an effective 100% Naval Blockade of Pakistan.

  7. Interestingly, i think the Fincantieri/Finmeccanica group from Italy which is already providing design inputs for the INS Vikrant is also helping on this project. Its not confirmed news though.

  8. Offcourse, as is everything related to india....especialyl food.......take this Project 15A news with a pinch of salt. The Long Range Surface to Air Missile (LR-SAM) which is to be equipped to this ship is still not ready. I think for the time being it will use Kashtan missiles of not use any at all till the time LRSAM becomes a reality.

The Extended Range 500KM BrahMos is also nto ready, nor is the Hyper-sonic version of it. Though progress on the BrahMos Project is good. Recent tests with a new guidance software and networking showed a Circular Error Probability of less than 5 meters from the previous 10.
