Those look like mutilated corpses, not so much massacred guys. But the point is made, never ever surrender to fanatics who get off on torture and execution.
I think from their locations and postures these guys went down fighting or at least running away, no lined up bodies and their gear is on them or near them. This was a battle and a massacre but not an execution.
