Marines with the 22nd Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron look over the Phantom Badger, a new high-performance tactical vehicle made by Boeing to replace the M1161 Internally Transportable Vehicle, before performing a fit check on the vehicle, Sept. 26, 2014. The vehicle has four-wheel drive and comes with four-wheel steering. This gives the vehicle the power to make extremely tight maneuvers, proven by its 24-foot turn radius. It is six inches narrower than a Mini Cooper, gets 21 miles to the gallon and can travel at speeds up to 80 miles per hour. This vehicle was designed to be loaded and unloaded quickly from an MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Michelle M. Reif / Released) |
Is HQMC actually looking to buy a new ITV? Now? With the elderly AAV soldiering on...with the JLTV buy looking less and less likely?
Anything for fucking princess. God damn MV-23
ReplyDeleteI figure this is to help "support" the company landing teams
ReplyDeleteThe current ITV is junk, can barely keep them running. They were almost scrapped a few months back so this isn't surprising

ReplyDeleteThe cost of the prime mover variant was over a million each according to the wiki on it.
Also I see the folding roll cage is now allowed. On the ITV they insisted on a fixed cage and went with a air bag suspension to change the ride height from 18in to 3in, so that the cage would fit in the MV-22 roof.
ReplyDeleteThe main issues still exist, what will escort these heavy laiden MV-22s? Other than a very specialized mission profile for special forces, I don't see the value for larger formations of regular forces.
ReplyDeleteThe theory is to time fixed wing to arrive at the LZ the same time as the MV-22 and rotary wing and likely to be out of range. The MV-22s get a head start and the AV-8Bs should be showing up at the LZ about 5 minutes before the MV-22s have to land.
