Today in Marine Corps history...

This month 70 years ago, Marines of the 1st Marine Division fought to take a vital airstrip on a small coral island in the Pacific known as Peleliu. Although the island was expected to be secure in just four days, a 72-day battle ensued and was known as the "bitterest battle of the war" for the U.S. Marines. Eight U.S. Marines from the 1st Marine Division received the Medal of Honor for actions during the battle.

  3. When I went through ITR at Geiger circa 70's they spoke of two places besides the Iwo Jima battle, one was Betio and the other Pelelui.
We trained with those scenario's in mind.
The obligatory Vietnam village and tunnels were taught but the focus was assaulting a Betio or Pelelui.
That is the battles that impressed the Marines that taught us.
That was their vision for the Marine Corps mission.
