IDF Patrol taken under fire...1 soldier injured.

via IDF Blog.
Earlier today, December 24, 2014, a sniper opened fire on an IDF routine patrol on the Israeli side of the southern border with Gaza. A soldier from the Bedouin Desert Reconnaissance Battalion was injured in the attack. He suffered a severe chest injury and was evacuated to a hospital for further medical treatment. The soldier’s family has been notified.
In response, IDF air and ground forces targeted Hamas positions in the immediate vicinity of the attack. Israeli farmers have been ordered to evacuate the area for their personal safety until further notice..
“This attack, the second of this week, is a lethal violation of the relative quiet along the Gaza border and is a blatant breach of Israel’s sovereignty,” said IDF Spokesperson Lt. Col. Peter Lerner. “The IDF will continue to use all necessary means in order to maintain the safety of the citizens of southern Israel and will not hesitate to respond to any attempt to harm IDF soldiers.”
There are too many hotspots to adequately keep track of them all.  I've had one on the Israeli situation.  The current govt is in turmoil bordering on chaos (this is admittedly an outside view but I base this on the fact that a minister was just arrested on corruption charges and it appears that Netanyahu is having difficulty forming a new ruling coalition).

But the bigger issue is between the IDF and Hamas.

Its been under-reported but we're seeing an increase in these types of incidents.  Its almost a certainty that we're looking at the possibility of another incident that will lead to full scale combat.

    1. Because we give them more aid than any other country by far. Also since we are their protector everything they do is blamed on US by the crazies in the Middle East. Just thinking out loud here. What's the long term Israeli plan? Can they continue like this for decades under constant assault?

    2. what is the plan? survival. do you think that the Middle East would turn into a land of milk and honey if the state of Israel didn't exist? do you think that the anti-Semites wouldn't just turn to a new enemy if the Jewish people didn't exist?

Christians are compelled by their faith to defend Israel. if you're not then fine. but please come up with more than standardized talking points developed by extremist to back your position. additionally we are heading into another decade of fighting in the Middle East. how long can we go on like this? the President is a Democrat so the liberals are quiet while this is going on...certain Republicans have never seen a war they didn't like...so while we are fighting in some cases for the Kings of certain oppressive regimes in the region, at least the Israelis are fighting for themselves.

  2. I am not a fan of America supporting Israel.

I think that we need to terminate funding for the state, much like we necked down all the under-table shenanigans that funded the IRA in the 80s.

They have LNG deposits offshore. They have the well known Ashkenazi brain trust to take American inventions, reengineer them to pass the patent scrutiny and then sell them to other states. Israeli ambassadors have TWICE apologized for doing exactly this.

They have an avowed 'Israel for the Jews' ethnostate going on while the West plays submarine under 'liberal' incitation to disavow our people's right to an ethnically indigene state of our own.

I do not appreciate our aiding people with 2-3 billion in FMS, yearly, who talk from both sides of their mouths and often maintain ILLEGAL dual citizenship in both countries.

    Who gave you the right...

Sometime in the late 1950s, that world-class gossip and occasional historian,
John F. Kennedy, told me how, in 1948, Harry S. Truman had been pretty much
abandoned by everyone when he came to run for president. Then an American
Zionist brought him two million dollars in cash, in a suitcase, aboard his whistle-stop
campaign train. 'That's why our recognition of Israel was rushed through so fast.' As
neither Jack nor I was an antisemite (unlike his father and my grandfather) we took
this to be just another funny story about Truman and the serene corruption of
    American politics.

If the above is true, Americans were finagled into being Israel's Big Brother for the political gain of ONE MAN.

It is not our right to promote the taking of Lebensraum from one nation at the cost of another. The Jews' fight is with the long dead Romans over their prior ouster. Not the Palestinians whom they robbed, raped, murdered and displaced with terrorist intimidation tactics. Without quarter or mercy (Menachim Begin, father of the car bomb...).

This will only get worse as Israel faces a demographic crisis with an enemy population within who have 4-6 kids per woman, starting as young as 17 and who already number 2 out of 8 million within Israel.

Having said all this, the reality remains that if you want to remove the morale effects of sniping, you first remove the targets of opportunity by going to robotics. You can use unmanned UGCV for running the roads around the wall. And you can use masted sensors and long endurance Heron/Hermes drones with Viper Strike or Griffin type weapons to aim for triangulated locations determined by Boomerang or similar sniper-finder kit (the unrelated 'Viper' was a thermographic camera and microphone system that geolocated and measured muzzle Q-pulse chemistry to ID snipers from a Swallow UAV, back in the 1990s).

You can even use remote weapons stations (aka 'sentry guns') on portable trailers like the Koreans have developed for their own DMZ border control problems.

But if you insist on sending manned patrols you should not be at all surprised when you suffer manned casualties.

Because men are soft, weak, targets that cannot carry the kinds of personal armor sufficient to render them safe from AMR/SASR type weapons or even big bore hunting rifles.

For both political and tactical reasons; man's place on the battlefield has long since become anachronistic and obsolescent, if not outright obsolete.

Get used to dealing with that reality in a followon replacement (also great day laborer!).

Or get used to seeing body bags and cripples.
