At least 17 members of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) have been killed in a Turkish military assault on the city of Silvan, which has a mainly Kurdish population, reports say.Here.
The Istanbul police department together with teams from the anti-terrorism branch launched the operation at 05:00 local time (02:00GMT), Dogan News Agency said.
The brilliance of Putin's move into Syria should be obvious by now. Not only is he helping prop up an ally, he's also driving wedges between allies.
Exhibit number 1....The Kurd problem.
The US can't be seen as abandoning them because we will be considered unreliable by the entire region (if we aren't already)...Turkey considers the PKK a terrorist organization and have started using heavy handed tactics against the entire Kurdish population.
So what do we have? We have allies operating at cross purpose with different goals and agendas.
We have a mess. Quite honestly the Pentagon, State Dept and Administration are focusing on the Russian action for one simple reason.
Its the easiest to deal with.
But even if the Russians pulled out tomorrow, the mess would remain. The fight against ISIS can't succeed because no one is taking that fight seriously. Assad is more focused on the rebels in his country (and ISIS just joined the furball). Iraq is focused on the Shia-Sunni sectarian strife (which ISIS is a part of). Jordan just wants it all to go away. Turkey we've covered. Saudi Arabia/GCC want Yemen pacified so they don't have an Iranian sponsored threat on their borders.
Only the US is even thinking about ISIS...and with all the drama in the region, I wonder if we're tackling the most important problem.
