Norwegian Combat Engineers in Latvia (pics)
Everyone has been "gaga" over Sappers during the war on terror. Combat Engineers in a Light role acting more like "enhanced breachers" than engineers.
Now that we're pivoting toward the likelihood of full scale combat we're seeing the revitalization of Combat Engineers as part of the maneuver force. What will be really interesting is how they see themselves being used. Classically they've been essential in the defense, overlooked in the assault and ill equipped to do much in that regard anyway (with the exception of providing bridging).
How do we turn it around for them? Somehow someway we've got to get the CE boys to finally embrace some type of demolition gun, mounted on a modern chassis. I won't hold my breath though!
