Sen. Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.) on Wednesday released a statement criticizing President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw troops from Syria, calling it an "Obama-like mistake."Story here.
The Wall Street Journal and Reuters, followed by others, reported on Wednesday that Trump planned to "immediately" remove U.S. troops from northern Syria. Trump appeared to confirm these reports on Twitter by saying that the United States "defeated" the Islamic State in Syria.
"We have defeated ISIS in Syria, my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency," Trump tweeted.
A few things while I've watched the story develop over the course of the previous day....
** Why is the establishment from both parties so against the idea of withdrawing troops from Syria?
** Why is the major media against the idea of withdrawing troops from Syria?
** If defeating ISIS wasn't the goal of the operation then why hasn't the American people been informed of the real truth?
That's just the quick and dirty.
My questions stretch from here to yonder and back again.
I get the Pentagon. I get Mattis. Those guys are from the Vietnam era and don't want to be holding the bag for what will be perceived as another lost war.
But the others? I just don't get it. Most perplexing is the Democrats. I would ordinarily label this as simply hatred of Trump but I'm really getting the impression that it's much more than that. I consider that puzzling.
How much trouble are we in if BOTH PARTIES are now in the perpetual war camp?
What has me spinning?
The ferocity of the opposition to the idea. US Troops are in harms way, chasing misty objectives that are based in any sort of reality but rather on feelings.
My current view? We're screwed. For some reason the elites of this country have decided that American participation in a fool hardy undertaking is more valuable than the lives of it's soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines.
Even worse?
All this is taking place in the backdrop of a China that is pumping out Cruiser sized ships (and other weapons of war) like pez dispensers. Another opportunity to rest, reset and modernize the force is being squandered by those that consider themselves our betters (assuming Trump yields to them).
I consider that most disturbing.
