US refuses tech transfer to S. Korea!

Thanks to Wobblehead for the link!

via Korea Times.

The U.S. government has rejected the transfer of F-35 fighter jet technology to Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), putting the Korean government's fighter jet development program or KFX into disarray, according to the local daily Chosun Ilbo, Tuesday.
The U.S. government reportedly refused the transfer of technological data, including that related to the AESA (active electronically scanned array) radar, according to the news report.
The AESA is a cutting-edge radar system with electronic warfare capabilities that can search and track targets more quickly and precisely than existing systems.
With the deal originally signed in September 2014, American aerospace manufacturer Lockheed Martin had agreed to provide Korea technology and technical support related to the fighter jet and to sell 40 F-35A fighter jets for 7.3 trillion won ($62 billion).
The U.S. government did not approve of the transfer because it violates its security policies, the report said.
Although the U.S. manufacturer has broken the contract, DAPA reportedly has no way to resuscitate the deal.
With the deal canceled, the Korean government plans to develop part of the technology on its own and work with European partners on the rest.
Here.

Interesting.  Time to send some e-mails out.  To be quite honest I don't know the ramifications of this.  Additionally I fail to understand what "secrets" the AESA have that we would want to keep secret and how denying them could throw the Korean program into disarray.  Even more puzzling to me is the fact that Korea would need to work with European partners on the rest.

They are suppose to be technologically advanced.

Yeah.  I need to get schooled on this!

I need more info before commenting.  Interesting.

F-35 does ski-jump tests...

How do you negate terrible news about the F-35 (referring to the Canadian liberal party stating that if they win they'll cancel the buy and start a REAL contest)?  You put out pics of the plane doing ski jump tests!

I don't think they're getting behind the power curve though.  Check this out from HUSH KIT Blog...
How many F-35s does it take to change a lightbulb?
Three: One to change the criteria of changing a lightbulb, the second to undergo maintenance, and the third to tell the press the lightbulb has been changed.
A couple of things on this.  First, HUSH KIT is asking its readers to add other F-35 jokes in the comments section and then do you get the irony in this joke?  The changing metrics are going to be a real issue soon.

Modern Day Marine is going on and I'm not there...

First.  To my contributors.  I'll be in touch with you by the end of the day to refund your money.

Second.  About the blog.  This is a hobby and a passion.  I would HAVE LOVED to attended MDM, but a hobby and a passion do not trump real life considerations and expenses.  We're not there yet and might not ever "arrive".  It is what it is.  Are there things that I could do to make this a self sustaining entity?  You bet.  Would it compromise my ability to say what's on my mind?  Absolutely!  I refuse to make those compromises so SNAFU! might not ever get to be as large as I would like.  I can live with that.

Lastly, I'll be scouring the net looking for coverage of the event.  BAE is having a press availability on the SUPER AV, Lockheed Martin is taking the wraps off their vehicle and I'm sure SAIC will have the Terrex 2 Advanced somewhere...even if its just in model form.  General Dynamics?  I have no idea.  They're as murky as the ocean bottom on their entrant.

That is all.

Xi Jinping is sending signals that the media is missing...

Everyone is focused on the Pope's visit to Washington.

I think that's wrong.  Don't misunderstand.  The Pope is an important person but the church doesn't actively (and in my opinion should have NO role in nation state affairs...Mark 12:16-17 and all that jazz) participate in world governance.

So what the hell am I talking about?  The Chinese head of state is in the US.  His first stop?  To meet with business leaders in Seattle.  Who is he talking to?  Boeing, Microsoft, Facebook and a visit to a high school.

The biggie in the room that no one is talking about?  He's also meeting with Henry Paulson.

Xi Jinping is smart.  He knows that Paulson predicted the economic trouble that they're currently facing.  He also knows that US business is desperate to get more access to their markets.

This is a pivot point in history.  We have the Chinese at a point of vulnerability and no one is talking about it.  Have a care though.  It won't last.  We need to capitalize on this moment or look back and regret it.

Ukraine's new 8x8 Amphibious APC...

My first impression when I saw this was that it was simply a reskinned BTR...On second glance I'm not so sure that's right.  Still it makes you wonder.  If the nation is in the fight for its life, why would they embark on such triviality?  Why wouldn't they be putting all their efforts to refurbing tanks in storage to get them into the fight.  Ponder that and check out bonus pics of a new 4x4 APC they're also developing...

Iran to hold naval drills with Russia...

via Sputnik..
Iran will hold joint drills with Russia within the next few months, according to an Iranian Naval Commander.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Iran plans to hold joint naval exercises with Russia, Iranian Naval Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said Tuesday.
“We will have joint drill[s] with [the] Russian Navy. We have recently had joint drills with Indian and Russian flotillas in our territorial waters,” Sayyari was quoted by Iran’s ISNA news agency as saying.
Sayyari said that ships from the Iranian Navy would visit Russia within the next few months.
Here.

Yep.  I'm overstating things when I say that Russia is the new power broker in the Middle East.  I'm overreacting when I say that the US has lost the initiative in the region and our strategy is in shambles.

Yeah.  The Iranian Navy is weak, the Russian Navy is rusting...but wait.  This is the same Iranian Navy that harassed the US Navy off the coast of Yemen, that broke an ad hoc phony blockade and delivered supplies to the Houthis....and that rusting Russian Navy now has 22 ships in the Med.

Put down your normalcy bias.  Stop waving the flag and take a good look at whats happening in the world.  Shouting USA, USA, USA is not a strategy.  Our competitors are running circles around us.
